name[edit]

The name of the game IS Sonic Crackers, as the ROM header name doesn't count.

On whose authority does the ROM header not count? For all we know, the menu screen with 'Sonic Crackers' was made by the hacker who ripped the game, and the ROM header is the closest we have to a name. One can't simply discount the ROM header, especially without giving any justification for such. Vague Rant 12:32, Aug 27, 2004 (UTC)

Apparently it's made on Sonic Cult's authority ;) See the overview section in the below link. Perhaps we should soften the claim... ~ FriedMilk 18:39, 2004 Aug 27 (UTC)

http://www.sonic-cult.org/dispgame.php?catid=6&gameid=4

Now that, I can believe. I agree that the outright statement should perhaps be modified down (and changing the capitalized IS to an italic one would also be a good idea). Would you like to do it, or shall I? Vague Rant 09:14, Aug 28, 2004 (UTC)
It's known that in early betas programmers love to put silly things in the header of their ROMs (the beta copy of Gunstar Fighters was labelled LUNATIC GUNSTAR, for example). That said, it would be foolhardy to take the ROM name as gospel (or should we move Sonic the Hedgehog 2 into "SONIC THE             HEDGEHOG 2" since that's what the ROM header reads? ThomasWinwood 19:35, August 31, 2005 (UTC)
"Sonic Crackers 32X" text has been founded at the early betas of Chaotix which had the header joke Knuckles' Ringstar (which is Starring Knuckles reverse), and Sonic St(a)dium text has been found at the Sonic Mars script. So it was meant to be officinally called Sonic Stadium but it's codename was Sonic Crackers. The End. NeoDoubleGames 17:06, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cancelled titles?[edit]

Could somebody explain this to me? How in the world is this a "cancelled game" when it's obvious that it was the proof of concept for Knuckles' Chaotix? --Aurochs (Talk | Block)

Well, proof of concept is not identical to a prototype version. Obviously, Crackers was intended to be a Genesis release. However, it was never released for the Genesis. Thus, this was cancelled. The concept was revived for Chaotix on the 32x, and the code was reworked into what we now know as Chaotix. If Sega Brass knew it was going to be made into a 32X game, even if they didn't know it was going to be Knuckles and co., they would have worked with 32X code, not Genesis code. (Zirka 07:07, 27 November 2005 (UTC))[reply]

Changing platforms isn't really abandonment. That's pretty much what happened here - they changed platforms and characters, but kept the same game mechanic. Hell, even the music is recognizeable in both games. Further, it's unlikely that the concept was "reused". Remember that in early 1994, the 32x was in the early development stage, and writing code for it would have taken somewhat longer due to inexperience. A proof of concept would have been made much more quickly and easily on the Genesis. --Aurochs (Talk | Block)

It's not even known if this ever was planned to be released. How can it be stated that something has been "cancelled" without knowing that? But this is probably just something that was moved from the Mega Drive to the Mega Drive 32X. Because of insufficient time, it's not unlikely that some Mega Drive games changed platform so that SEGA would have any Mega Drive 32X games to present. And if it was released, although on a different platform, the game wasn't cancelled. It's like saying that several Rare games were cancelled because they were moved from Gamecube to XBOX. Need a better picture[edit]

There are better screenshots of actual gameplay from this game. I think it would be more important to put them in this article rather than the rather dull title screen.

I once had proof that this game was suppose to be real[edit]

I can't believe I actually remember this, but back in 1994, after the release of Sonic & Knuckles, SEGA of America sent me a document regarding Sonic & Knuckles. Why they sent it to me and what it was all about, I can't recall (I think part of that document was a more detailed instruction of the game).

Anyway, at the last page of the document, there was a phrase that was there in order to keep readers in suspense. Again, I can't recall what that was but it went something like:

But what has become of the evil Dr Robotnik, could another Sonic title be in development (Sonic Chaotix)

A year passed and I saw a game in a magazine called Knuckles Chaotix, I knew right there that this was the game that SEGA was talking about on the document they sent me. I never had a 32X, so I didn't get to play this game until the first 32X emulator. The game was not that great, especially since I already tried Sonic Cracker before.

Anyway, just to let you guys know that I very much doubt that this game was a hoax.

I had read this in the past, and figured it was just someone's personal anecdote, no way to prove it. But looking at this source, it sounds pretty similar to this actually. Interesting. Maybe...[edit]

Couldn't Crackers be considered a genuine prototype (for Sonic 4)? After all, Sonic 2 & 3 were both developed by Sega Technical Institute, and Sonic Team didn't used the same sprites for Sonic CD as they did Sonic 1, didn't they? CatMan 00:56, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How come...[edit]

In the picture, it uses the Sonic 2 sprite...but obviously Sonic 3 would've been out by then?

Actually, that's the Sonic 1 sprite. Check the above link to Sonic CulT.E Liquere 03:03, 14 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It prolly was just placeholder graphics. Unreal Tournament 2k7 is being designed with crappy graphics to start with just to get the gameplay flow just right. After that, they make everything look pretty. It's not an uncommon practice. Lengis 15:52, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Sonic Crackers(betatest) 001.JPG[edit]

Image:Sonic Crackers(betatest) 001.JPG is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Sonic Stadium is a fansite[edit]

I was redirected here when I looked for info about said fansite. I will also request an article.Goodone121 (talk) 02:55, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merge[edit]

I request that this be merged with Knuckle's Chatoix as previously stated. With the discovery of new prototypes, we've found much more evidence to support the theory that they are the same game. 208.190.203.248 (talk) 03:23, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. I don't see any information outside of speculation that this is linked to Chaotix. If there is some very reliable evidence, then I believe it ought to be linked to from the Wiki page so all people interested may read this research. Zirka (talk) 16:10, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Here is a link to a page talking of everything found when playing/hacking the earliest prototype of Knuckles Chaotix:

[1]

It says the following facts:

  • On Character selection, there is an empty character after Mighty.
  • Inside the ROM, Sonic and Tails 1-up icons are found.
  • A missing character with no sprites, nicknamed Wechina by finders, has an orange pallete (only seen in this version), and Tails's Flying ability. (Also only in this version) This imples he was Tails at one point.
  • Mighty's frames are identical to Sonic's, even missing Wall-Climbing frames inside Sonic Crackers are the same, along with HOLD sprites.
  • Inside a Time Attack mode, the text "SonicCrackersS32X" can be found.

Any more proof? 67.64.43.102 (talk) 20:33, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why is there a pic of Shade here ?[edit]

MERGE[edit]

Alright, this is the same person who posted the above request of merge, and again: I, along with many talented people who have hacked and found full-100% proof that this was a proof-of-concept, suggest merging this into Knuckle's Chaotix Article. (I'm using a school-computer to say this) 204.185.144.155 (talk) 13:04, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Prototype of what?[edit]

What game is it a prototype of? This article makes it sound like a prototype of Sonic 1,but then it makes it seem like a prototype for Sonic 2. Is it a prototype of an unreleased game? 98.14.15.12 (talk) 02:45, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Release Date[edit]

Has anyone (other than myself) considered that this might have been an April Fool's joke? Maybe the article should state that or something... - .:. Jigsy .:. (talk) 10:18, 22 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

**************[edit]

I added some information on the existence of Tails as a glitchy character in the final version of Chaotix. However, I left it unsourced because the most reliable sources I could find were YouTube and a fansite called Sonic Retro. It was deleted, so can someone help me? — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheJoebro64 (talkcontribs) 20:27, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Requested merge 1 March 2017[edit]

I am requesting this move mostly on notability grounds. Not many reliable sources have covered Crackers in great detail; it'll work better as part of "development" on the main Chaotix page. TheJoebro64 talk, 06:56, 1 March 2017 (UTC))[reply]

I agree...I'll figure out how to start a merge request so we can get other opinions. TarkusAB 22:49, 13 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
