Mrs. Cartman's name[edit]

IMDb has Mrs. Cartman's name as "Liane" [1], while it's spelled both "Liane" [2] and "Lianne" [3] at South Park Studios' site. It's never spelled "Luanne", though; if there's a source for the latter, please post it. --Arteitle 05:42, Oct 10, 2004 (UTC)

Best Known?[edit]

Is she really best known for South Park? I seem to recall that she has a long history of voice work in a variety of old cartoons. Is this something worth researching and adding into here? --Xquester

I think she's best known for South Park. I realize her career was more than that, but South Park just sticks out to me. After all, the South Park characters, according to findagrave.com, are on her grave. Jbm867 05:48, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Less Known but Notable[edit]

Fans of interactive computer games of the 1990s may recognize her work if they'd played the Palladium Interactive send up of X-Files, known as "X-Fools." Bergman performed the Gillian Anderson-like voice of Detective Dede Scudder, as well as other voices. She also did voices for titles such as Leisure Suit Larrys 6 & 7, Sierra's Gabriel Knight, she did all the female parts for Nine Worlds featuring Patrick Stewart, The Curse of Monkey Island, and many more. Besides being the official Snow White voice for Disney in 1989, Bergman could imitate a host of other familiar voices. She had an unique talent of replicating the voices of well known names like Marilyn Monroe, Cher, Catherine Deneuve, Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Alanis Morrissette, Jewel, Annie Lennox, Helen Hunt, Holly Hunter, Alfre Woodard, Joan Cusack, Eartha Kitt, Melissa Gilbert, Elizabeth Taylor, and even a young Macaulay Culkin. She had a pheomenally versatile singing voice as well.

In Weird Al Yankovic's CD title Running With Scissors, Bergman was the voice of the "Gentile Chick" on the third track of the album, Pretty Fly For A Rabbi. Her voice over work was also featured in hundreds of commercials. Chances are you still hear her today, but don't know it. She also trained a many others in voice over workshops where she taught others how to do what she did. There's a lot more about her at (see [4]).

Motives for suicide?[edit]

There is a clear lack of suggestions for motive behind suicide. Did she suffer from depression? Was there some traumatic event that triggered it? Or mayhaps, is a lack of evidence responsible?

Unique Gravemarker?[edit]

Keeping it encyclopaedic[edit]

I'd keep an eye on that fact that this is an encyclopaedia article, not a piece designed for promoting, memorialising or celebrating Bergman. Most of the sources currently given do not look that solid. The main memorial site could be considered a fansite. Objective third party sources - biography, newspapers are preferable. Conflicting depression statements[edit]

There are conflicting statements within the article regarding Ms Bergman's depression.

In the lede section: "Bergman suffered from depression, which was caused by her mother having cancer, and job-related stress."

In the "Illness and death" section: "Bergman had been suffering from bipolar and generalized anxiety disorders, which she hid from her family, friends, and co-stars. Because her mother was diagnosed with cancer, Bergman's depression was mistaken as a reaction to her mother's illness along with job-related stress.[22] Andrade said that he found herbal mood medications that Bergman had hidden in their home.[23]"

To contemplate killing oneself requires a lot of inner pain and self-loathing. The "Illness and death" section sounds like it's much more likely and is sourced, to boot. I suggest reworking the lede to reflect the sourced information. Thank you, Wordreader (talk) 03:04, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Post hoc ergo propter hoc in the lead[edit]

I changed a small section of the lead section. Just because she suffered from depression and committed suicide and suicide is linked to depression, doesn't mean that we can claim that her depression caused her to commit suicide, doubly so without a source. It is a clear case of post hoc ergo propter hoc to try to make the connection and short of someone who can go back in time, or possibly has access to her suicide notes, we won't know with the certainty needed to make the link. "Committed Suicide" vs "Took Own Life"[edit]

I've had two edits reverted in which I changed the phrase "committed suicide" to "took her own life". Now, I have my own opinions about the use of the phrase "committed suicide" (I believe it stigmatizes the victim) and if you have a different opinion, that's fine with me. But the fact that remains that "to take one's own life" is a widely-accepted phrase, not some politically-correct euphemism, and an editor should be able to use it. The term "committed suicide" by no means "stigmatizes the victim"; it simply is just a straight forward indication one intentionally killed themself. It's also less wordy than "took her own life". SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 10:47, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Also - I do not expect you to agree with my opinion, as it's not really important to this discussion, but just FYI, this is where I derive my opinion from. It's rather widely-held. Long story short, "committed" implies a crime, and indeed suicide has historically been treated as a crime, thus stigmatizing those who kill themselves.
That's an oversimplified take on "committed"; it doesn't necessarily involve crime (i.e. one can commit to a goal, commit time to something, or commit to a relationship). Using "took her own life" is beating around the bush. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 17:08, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

We should not be saying "committed suicide" in any situation that is outside of the discussion of suicide as a crime. If we are being neutral about people who kill themselves, we say they took their own life or killed themselves. Hello, I am unclear why this memorial site used throughout the article: http://www.mkbmemorial.com/ appears to be a memorial site dedicated to the basketball player kobe bryant. The domain used to be a Mary Kay Bergman memorial site, but it appears the domain expired a while ago and was recently made into a Kobe Bryant memorial site. How do we know she was an additional voice in the Jimmy Neutron movie? There is nowhere in the credits that says anything about additional voices, nor is there a reference. Times don’t add up[edit]

It says she was last “seen” alive at 9pm from a phone call (?) and that she was found by her husband an hour and 20 minutes later, but declared dead at the hospital at 10:18pm, so unless the ambulance was a DeLorean…
