I'm surprised there is no mention of the Hayward climate being by bay area standards -the best. Never cold,hot,too wet, or dry.Summers are spring like,Winters mild. Climate should definitely be mentioned, but its not much different from other cities. though the bay area is noted for having microclimates. Eastwood was a resident in Piedmont, not hayward, AFAIK.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 06:23, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well,Wiki says Johannesburg is a "subtropical climate". Yet,its winter temperatures are colder then Hayward.

Also- Tom Hanks the actor went to Chabot College..and has done free events for the school. He always says nice things about the schools drama and credits it for helping him develop.

Is Jon Miller mentioned? The Baseball HOF announcer is from Hayward.

Template cleanup[edit]

I've cleaned up the hayward template. some items removed are: silver star veterans park (ipn)-cannot find info on it. Holiday Bowl-defunct bowling alley of minor historical interest (at least so far). Edwin Markham Elementary School, replaced by its replacement school. Buffalo Bills Brewery, first CA brewpub but no article♥. links to AC transit and Bart for west hayward may refer to the test yards and training yards, which dont have articles. Bret Hart Middle School, and Newman Park, no article yet, minor. hayward public library, no article. Impact Academy♥, placed a brief mention here. Fairway park, minor park. Im mentioning them here only to encourage other editors to first create articles for these subjects. if they turn out to be more notable than they seem, we can add them to the template. I also want to merge the "hayward attractions" template, but that can be discussed at the template talk pages. ok, ive removed the attractions template, as its just clutter. in that template were the following subjects without articles: Hayward Area Historical Society♥, and the McConaghy House. so two more potential articles. In the late 1950s, Asian Americans began moving to a new housing development in south Hayward off Ruus Road. The developer was willing to sell new homes to Asian Americans, despite housing discrimination against minorities in California at that time.

This article would benefit from better images than the current crop, which is primarily aerial views indistinguishable from any other aerial view of any city on earth. photos on WP/WC should be information rich, which these arent. Obscure reference works[edit]

For anyone researching the history of hayward, these titles were used in the first edits to the article: Mt. Eden, Cradle of the Salt Industry in California by John Sandoval, published by Mt. Eden Historical Publishers, Hayward; Hayward ... the First 100Years by Eden Writers, Florence Carr Randall, editor, published by the Hayward Centennials Committee. Name history[edit]

It may well be impossible to actually disentangle the actual explanations here, but I did remove a bit that I am quite sure is false -- that the name 'Haywood' was used 'because it was not legal to name a post office after a living person'. There are numerous counterexamples, e.g. Annette, California, and my own hometown, Janesville, Wisconsin, which the Postmaster General indubitably named after the postmaster, Henry Janes, even though he had submitted the name 'Blackhawk' (since there was already a post office by that name in Wisconsin Territory). The explanation for 'Haywood' seems to have been there since what this article history calls a "student essay" was pasted in back in 2004, but is not supported by the reference later appended (Durham's). That book, searchable on Amazon, indicates only the name changes without an explanation.

If I can suggest some possibilities, with an eye toward local research of archives, it may be that either the Post Office/Postmaster General (who in my interpretation had sole final authority on these matters) had a duplicate name, or misread the name, or any of various possible rationales involving that bureaucracy; the name 'Haywood' was chosen to suggest a shady, attractive location for other settlers (which was often a factor in these sorts of decisions); or another entity, perhaps a railroad, may have had a naming conflict and that spilled over. It's also *just* possible at this point in time that spelling was still a little flexible. In any event, it was not for the reason stated, and there is no source backing that statement up, so it had no place in the article. --Dhartung | Talk 21:55, 24 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Climate zones[edit]

I removed some info on USDA and Sunset Magazine climate zones as unsourced, but i need to add a source on its mediterranean climate, which i found in another article on the bay area.

Hayward has a Mediterranean climate,is a USDA Z10A and Sunset z17, and contains microclimates, both of which are features of the greater Bay Area.
