Influences[edit]

I added W. D. Ross, who is one of the influences behind Regan's harm principle, and G. E. Moore, who has influenced his theory of inherent value.

"Radical New Theories" of Ethics?[edit]

Just a query, is it really true that other animal rights / animal liberation campaigners need to "invent radical new theories of ethics"? Isn't Peter Singer's version merely a simple extension of utilitarianism to include not only rational beings but any being that can suffer? How does this differ from Regan's extension of Kantianism to grant moral status to non-rational animals? (didn't want to edit it out though since I'm not sure .. anyone?) -- Rkundalini 22:05, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

WikiProject class rating[edit]

This article was automatically assessed because at least one WikiProject had rated the article as start, and the rating on other projects was brought up to start class. BetacommandBot 16:38, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A section on Tom Regan would be appropriate for the Veganism article, but I don't have access to any of his writings which mention veganism. Perhaps somebody who does could either link these writings or could write a section about Regan in the "ethics" section of the Veganism article. KellenT 02:32, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Anybody? KellenT 14:41, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I did this a long time ago. KellenT 20:14, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Isn't he a vegan?[edit]

I thought Tom Regan was a vegan, but he's in the category "American vegetarians." Is he not vegan? --N-k, 00:11, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have been unable to find any sources which say directly that he's a vegan. He says in The Case for Animal Rights that he's a vegetarian, but it's unclear whether that's vegan vegetarianism or not. Based on his theories, it's probably reasonable to assume he's vegan, but we'll still need a citation. KellenT 20:14, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Talk is that Peter Singer is vegetarian but not strict about veganism except when he's being honored by animal advocates in public events. Then the food is vegan. The 1990 movie honoring Peter Singer's philosophy showed him as a vegetarian. MaynardClark (talk) 15:21, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Cause of death[edit]

Is there news about the cause of his death? MaynardClark (talk) 23:08, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

pneumonia, the same cause of death as French philosopher Rene Descartes, whose philosophy Tom Regan and a number of other animal advocates have long criticized. MaynardClark (talk) 14:47, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Intellectual lineage[edit]

Somewhere, in this article, or in a different article (linked to this article) should be a brief or extended lineage of these prima facie duties to animals arguments in the development of animal rights theory, as in the work of W. D. Ross and Steven M. Wise and Gary Francione. This article merely discusses Regan's view on G. E. Moore. MaynardClark (talk) 14:47, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
