Update[edit]

updated 3/3/2005 to reflect Roper v. Simmons Supreme Court decision regarding execution of criminals who were under 18 at time of crime.

I made a few changes to reflect this and clarify the practical aspect of the issue as per last comment. Also, as a correction, Malvo took a plea bargain last fall in Prince William County, Virginia where the prosecutor had made it quite clear he wanted a death penalty like he got for fellow DC sniper John Allen Muhammad. Guess he (or his legal team) didn't see any point in taking a chance with the U.S. Supreme Court.

As a side comment, I don't think the potential for the death penalty has been much if any deterrent for contemporary murderers under 18. Most seem to have little concern for their future. The prospect for life in prison without possibility of parole might even be a stronger attention-getter. Its a shame we Virginia taxpayers will pay to house Malvo for the rest of his natural life, but its a worthy investment considering the alternative. Convert to Islam[edit]

Someone needs to do some math[edit]

"In all, Malvo is believed to have been involved in 16 murders and 7 additional attempted murders (23 murder attempts in all), of which the Beltway sniper attacks constituted 10 murders and 15 attempts."

I don't know about you, but 10+15 doesn't equal 23. So there's some majore issues there. I don't know enough about this, and as of writing, its nearly 2am locally, so I was planning on getting some sleep. Kaiser matias 09:48, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Joining John Allen Muhammad section could be improved[edit]

It seems like the facts surrounding his acquisition of an AR-15 should be verified with a citation and that the second paragraph should be merged with the first. Just before the first victims table, the article states that there were two additional victims whose names are not known. One of the two could be added to the table: 76 year old Albert Michalczyk of Oro Valley, Arizona, who was non-fatally shot on a Clearwater, Florida golf course on May 18, 2002. Malvo Shooting helped get us into the Iraq War...[edit]

The single biggest accidental effect of the Malvo shootings gets ignored by everybody. The Senate debate on whether to go to war took place at the same time. War was declared on October 11, 2002. The Malvo shooting spree dominated the headlines and pushed the war debate completely off the front page of most newspapers for the entire debate. illegal alien[edit]

There's been some edit warring over the sentence "Malvo is an illegal alien", which is written in the present tense but is cited to sources saying that he entered the US illegally as a teenager or maybe as a child. It seems illogical to say he is illegally in the country now: he is in a US prison because a US court sent him there; i.e., he can't legally be anywhere else. That's actually a really good question. I had a longer write-up about what I found out, but I'm not sure it is relevant - WP:ORIGINAL. Under that policy, there would need to be something that says either Malvo is not an illegal alien (at least while he is incarcerated), or that imprisoned illegal aliens as a whole are no longer illegal while incarcerated. --Mr. Vernon (talk) 14:55, 28 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The article should just say what the source says: that Malvo originally entered the country illegally. If you've got more (sourced) info and think it is relevant, then by all means use it. It's just that extrapolating Malvo's original illegal entry to Malvo currently illegal is WP:SYNTH and in this case it doesn't make any sense. He is exactly where a US court determined he is supposed to be and he can't leave even though I'm sure he'd like to.
