Death[edit]

Note this page says he died 2005-03-10 whilst Recent Deaths says 2005-03-11. The BBC says "Thursday night" http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/low/entertainment/tv_and_radio/4340115.stm -- SGBailey 12:37, 2005 Mar 11 (UTC)

Did you know that he used to deride the Pope of Rome?[edit]

Did anyone else know that he used to deride the Pope of Rome through doing skits in which he was dressed up as the Pope of Rome & seated on a sedan chair? Uh, yeah, like all the time, dude, he equally savaged the Catholics and the Anglicans, which was the charm of the show.
In fact, in one of his monologues, he said, "I hope God has a sense of humour; otherwise, I'm in bloody trouble."

Toast[edit]

I wonder about the cited toast "Goodnight, thank you, and may your god go with you". I remember it as "...may your feet go with you." Was this done only once for the effect or was this the actual form? 213.115.59.220 14:56, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I watched him often and it was always "...and may your god go with you."

Anti-Catholicism categories[edit]

This article was in the categories Category:Anti-Catholicism in Ireland and Category:Anti-Catholicism in the United Kingdom. I've removed them, as I don't think he really fits: those categories are mainly about sectarian discrimination and persecution. Allen wasn't 'anti-Catholic' in that sense, being equally opposed to all religions; if he did focus on Catholicism, it's only because that's the one he had most personal familiarity with, rather than due to particular prejudice against it. (To put it another way, if he belongs in the 'Anti-Catholicism' categories, then he should also be in 'Anti-Protestant' ones as well.) Robofish (talk) 16:10, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New Faces on the BBC?[edit]

It states in this article that Dave Allen appeared on New Faces, in 1959, on the BBC. I have only ever heard of the programme being on ITV, made by Associated Television (ATV). Here's the Wikipedia article about that programme: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Faces

Underwater car excape[edit]

The filmed underwater car escape on one of Allen's television shows is surely worthy of inclusion, not least because of Allen's claim that a boy on a day trip to Ayr had escaped from the family car, when it fell into the, only because he had seen the stunt on the show. Just wondering how reliable the source is re the story of how Allen lost his finger. According to a recent BBC documentary about him, even people who had been friends with him for several years didn't know the truth about it as he had given so many conflicting explanations, not least during his TV monologues. Yes, quite so. In that documentary, even his own son claimed that he did not know the real reason. That was the only on-line source I could find. The source is the Irish Independent from 20 February 2005, where the informant is one of Allen's old schoolmates in "Kenagh", Paddy Egan, who sat beside him at school. Egan claims that Allen missed six days' school in June of 1941, claiming that the O'Mahony family "lived in a big house in Moss Town and outside it there was an old mill that had been burnt, but children played there. The old cog wheels were still there and David put his finger into one of the cog wheels, one of the other children moved it and the finger was removed." Not sure if this makes the story any more or less believable than if Allen had told it himself. But at least it's a mainstream and local printed source. The same story appeared in the Longford Leader, with a picture of the house: [1] and with an exact date of 6 June 1941 also given. Maybe both sources should be used? The claim it was done to avoid National Service raises a few questions the answers for which could be used to clarify the truthfulness or otherwise. Was there National Service in the Irish Republic? Noting he came to Britain at 19, would an Irish citizen (as he remained lifelong) be liable or exempt from the British system of conscription which lasted until the early 1960s?Cloptonson (talk) 13:06, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

4th Child[edit]

This source mentions: "daughter Christina Pette (adopted when she was nine by the comedian and his first wife Judith)" and "his other children, Jane and Edward, and his stepson Jonathan."
