I am editing this article, which is not in American English, without a firm grasp of many aspects of British English (let alone of Australian English, if that distinction is important in the areas i discuss below). And American and British English Differences, Australian English, and even Wikipedia:Manual of Style are silent on hyphenation.

My edit changes the attributive-noun phrase "four wheel drive" to "four-wheel-drive", which is what careful American English does with such a phrase: "A four-wheel drive" has one hyphen because that is what it takes to clarify that "four" and "wheel" combine to modify "drive" rather than "four" modifying a compound called "wheel drive". Yet another hyphen is needed in "four-wheel-drive vehicle", to rule out "four-wheel" modifying a compound called "drive vehicle". (A moment's reflection will remind you that once there are two hyphens not separated by a space, the disambiguation of the syntax is incomplete, because you can't tell which of the two hyphens binds stronger, but most of the ambiguity of the hyphen-free version is gone.)

If British or Australian grammar or style differs here, or in the positioning of "only", i apologize for the mixed-dialect edit. But maybe we can get it documented for those who follow. --Jerzy 06:14, 3 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Your hyphenation is correct. In Australia the problem is avoided by using the abbreviation "4WD", as in the original version of the article. The article on Sport utility vehicles spells out the antipodean (from your perspective) convention. Tiles 07:00, 3 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Thanks; i'd noticed the SUV article & planned to look at it at least to figure out how it should be linked with a 4WD article that would at least use SUV and the remote rover article as examples; IIRC correctly i didn't regard the hyphenation issue as worth remarking on until it occurred to me that it figures in the proper name for the 4WD page. Maybe i'm still unbold, but reorganizing among article titles and redirects feels "stickier" than other editing, so i'm so far compulsive abt being sure to get the title right.

So i gather the hyphenation follows the same principles despite the reversed coriolis forces [wink]; no surprise, but the quotes issues, and the punctuation one, are enough to spook me. (In spite of my willingness to flout the illogical American convention (of introducing added punctutation inside the quotes) even before i knew the British one differs.) Do you think it's a good rule of thumb that the Style Guide already covers the differences, among all those 3 national dialects?

4WD is fully recognized "down here" (from you point of view [smile]) for advertising and informal usage; maybe i'm too prissy in preferring to make articles formal, as it would be silly and a shame to think, just bcz informal writing is so often imprecise, that the imprecision is *caused* by the informality! Similarities

Looks similar to landscapes on Madagascar. It's noted as similar to the "Chocolate Hills" formations on the Philippines island of Bohol, an island province of the Philippines located in the Central Visayas region, in articles on the geological formations on Bohol Island.
