Pre-History of Canada ?

I added the other years from the 1860s to the first line of the new table. Are we allowed to talk about years in Canada before it actually was Canada? Or would that just be silly? I mean, the area existed, and had people in it... But mostly I admit I did it just to get the years in the table to line up nicely. :) -- Oliver P. 07:20, 21 Nov 2003 (UTC)

I would prefer to start the table with the founded day of Canada. But I guess adding history before that and call it "History of Canada" is acceptable, see Timeline of United States history (Beginnings to 1599). --Yacht 08:24, 21 Nov 2003 (UTC)

This discussion is predicated on the erroneous assumption "it wasn't Canada before 1867-07-01". "Canada" was an official subdivision of New France until 1763. The British regime retained the name "Canada" 1763 to 1774 and reinstituted it in 1791 (Upper and Lower). In 1841 the unified Province of Canada was established. It was only the "Dominion of Canada" that was born in 1867. "Canada" as an official name goes back centuries before that, probably 1608 or shortly thereafter. Indefatigable 22:18, 2 Dec 2003 (UTC)

(Re-)Organisation

Maybe we should do this by decades rather than by year. Would that make more sense (and be less arbitrary?) Martin 01:25, 22 Nov 2003 (UTC)

I think it would be best to have the groups gradually expand, as we do with the year articles. The most recent years would probably be most useful one their own, but then earlier dates can be grouped by decade, while precolonial times can be grouped by century or millenium. - SimonP 01:41, Nov 22, 2003 (UTC)

I know I'm arriving late here, but I can't quite figure out what's happened. There were separate groups of timelines, in the style of Timeline of United States history but they were deleted/redirected.[3] And there was an article called List of 'years in Canada' which was redirected to this timeline. Currently, it has poor functionality, and is difficult to maintain. How about we swallow our national pride and follow the American model, dividing this massive block of years into the subsections that are already listed in History of Canada: New France 1604-1763, Canada under British Imperial Control 1764-1867, Post-Confederation Canada 1867-1914, and then by decade (or two decades) from there on? Personally, I think anything prior to New France should omitted as teleology. -- TheMightyQuill 17:14, 2006-04-7

Years in which nothing happened

Is the timeline for 18th-century Canada pretty much complete, or is more expansion planned? I ask because there is a large number of years in which "nothing happened" -- or, at least, nothing's been added to the article: '03, '05, '06, '08, '14, '16, '17, '18, '23, '24, '26, '27, '32, '35, '39, '53, '67, '70. At the very least, these should be denoted as stubs (some of them already are). Android79 18:55, Mar 10, 2005 (UTC)

I've added the years 1800-1835 from the timeline I posted to usenet, but it's getting late, so I'm giving up for the night.

I've added the raw data, in the format that seems to be favoured, but haven't really Wikified it.

I'm not quite sure how to get the earlier decades to line up properly.

There; I've added entries for everything before 1700, and everything after 1800. Still not wikified; I'm just putting in the data.

Although the blocks of unwikified text are a nuisance, I must say that the large number of repeats are more annoying...what's with that? Sometimes something will be repeated four or five times... Adam Bishop 05:49, 25 Feb 2004 (UTC)

There; entries are now available for all of Canada's history for all those who wish to add more information.

I apologize for the lack of wikification. However, from what I've read of the help pages so far, the theory seems to be that the basic idea is to post a mediocre page now and improve it later, step by step. Plus, I'm still so new to this that I'm not really sure how to wikify things properly. :)

Adam Bishop, I apologize for the repeated entries, as well. The data I'm entering is from a timeline I compiled for myself and never quite managed to find the time to clean up; the repeats often include details that were troublesome for me to merge into a single entry.

On another topic; the entries for the early 1700s are rather sparse. If they remain so, it might be a good idea to eventually merge them into "decades" entries, perhaps up to 1750 or so. (Things seem to start to pick up in 1754.)

Top ten list, perhaps?

Given that the timeline is now a rather imposing block of years... perhaps the main timeline page could list the top tennish important events in Canadian history, with links, for easy reference?

First suggestions - first discovery by John Cabot (1497); first settlement; Hudson's Bay Company charter (1670); King William's War (1689); expulsion of Acadians; Seven Years' War and/or the Plains of Abraham (1756, 1759); arrival of the first Loyalists (1776); War of 1812; Rebellions of 1837; Confederation (1867); Metis Rebellions of 1870 and 1885; Vimy Ridge (1917); Statute of Westminster (1931); Dieppe (1942) and/or Normandy (1944); Canadian Citizenship Act (1946); Bill of Rights (1960); Canadian flag (1964); October Crisis (1970); Quebec referendums (1980, 1995); Terry Fox run (1980); patriating the Constitution (1982)

Thoughts on reformatting?

Also... I'm not entirely satisfied with the way I set up the earliest entries in the timeline. BC and AD seems a reasonable enough distinction. 1 AD - 999 AD and then 1000-1400 isn't that bad, but could be improved; maybe put the break just before the vikings arrive? And the 1400s could really be shrunk to 1490s, or even 1492-1499. -- DataPacRat 19:06, Feb 25, 2004 (UTC)

There should be only one Timeline of Canadian History consistent with the Timeline of United States history. For the period 1533 to 1759 there should be a Timeline of New France history that includes Louisiana etc. JillandJack 21:27, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

it seemed silly to not have 1812 as this is the only war where Canada was attacked directly (for the most part), links to laura secord, queenston heights, issac brock and lundys lane

Someone oughta create a navigation template for all these XXXX in Canada articles. Then you wouldn't need this article itself at all. An apology re BC BCE

I have recently reverted (several times) a change from BCE to BC. This was because I assumed that this page was stable as BCE+CE.
