alternative theories?[edit]

"alternative theories" section usually makes the article poor as they consider nonsense as solid "theories"

Farm owners[edit]

I made an edit here which removed the names of the owners of the two farms where the airplane crash landed, because their names are not included in the NTSB report used as a source. I realized later that there's another offline source cited there, Everitt 2004, which I don't have access to. If someone has a copy (or wants to track one down) and can verify that the info is supported, it could be restored to the article. Ivanvector (^Talk/_Edits) 14:32, 16 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The Day the Music Died → Death of Buddy Holly – It would be easier and simpler to name it “Death of Buddy Holly” as opposed to “The Day the Music Died” because it would be a more recognizable and comprehensive name, and also the current name could be confused with the song American Pie. The current name also does not seem very appropriate for Wikipedia, you don’t see, for example, the page for the Attack on Pearl Harbor being named “A Date Which Will Live In Infamy” (I am not comparing Buddy Holly’s death to Pearl Harbor, I was just using it as an example of not naming the article of an event a name that the event has been given). In case of an argument that could validly be made that other notable people died other than Holly in the crash, a precedent would be made by the article for The death of Princess Diana because Dodi Fayed died along with Diana, and however the article is titled “Death of Diana, Princess of Wales” and not “Death of Diana, Princess of Wales and Dodi Fayed”. Oppose; no evidence that the proposed title is more recognizable (the common name appears to be the current title in Google Books, and the phrase clearly refers to this event). The proposed title is definitely not more comprehensive because it effectively excludes the other artists, as noted in the second half of the statement above. The historical impact of the event is based not only on the death of Holly, but because several important artists died in the crash. The attack on Pearl Harbor is usually referred to by that name, so the current title of that article is likewise in line with WP:COMMONNAME. Basically, this is the main name for the event the article is about, not a nickname for it. Dekimasuよ! 10:15, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. It's clear on Google Ngram Viewer that the Day the Music Died is much, much more common in the published English corpus than Buddy Holly. The Ngram Viewer is unable to display prevalence of the term "death of Buddy Holly", but obviously, searching for the shorter term "Buddy Holly" would necessarily include that longer phrase. --Coolcaesar (talk) 13:48, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. This event didn't become known as such simply because Buddy Holly was killed. Valens has La Bamba (the song and the biopic) to his name, and those have nothing to do with Holly. "Death of Kobe Bryant" was deemed an unsuitable title for the helicopter crash that killed him, and the other victims there were much less notable than Valens and Richardson. Oppose – Three of the four victims are wiki-notable (have their own article here) and all comparably famous. Naming this article after only one of them would give only a partial description of the subject (and a title such as Death of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and "The Big Bopper" J. P. Oppose - this isn't about the death of Buddy Holly, it's about an aircrash that Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper were all involved in. Would be incredibly bizarre to reduce it to just one person. Canterbury Tail talk 17:51, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
