Comments[edit]

There's a lot of controversy about the merits of Hanon's exercises. The article just says that these have become "standard" for "modern piano teachers" but it's more complex than that.

I've added a sentence or two, but it would be good to have an extended section about their whole use and POVs about them. I'll do more when I get time. I'm still feeling traumatised at the very concept of a Hanon Marathon. Urgh! Kisch

I only know this: after a few minutes of warming up by Hanon's exercices, it's so much easier to handle a Bach fugue! Try it yourself: your hands feel a lot faster and more flexible and the piano keys feel a lot lighter! And i believe i'm in good company if Horowitz liked it too, obscure critics notwithstanding...

The exercises have their own article, which is much longer. Further explanation and opinions should be added there. Meanwhile, it would be nice to have more information on Hanon himself, like biographical information, or if he wrote anything else. Rigadoun (talk) 19:49, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think I have found a compromise which satisfies both the Hanon groupies and the Hanon detractors, vis I play the half of the exercise which works mainly on the RH with that hand, and vice-versa. This gives the hands 50% exercise and 50% rest. I'm also trying to keep a beautiful tone as I play them. I would have been sad to let them go completely because they really do work magic in the fingers. John160251 (talk) 22:18, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am very interested in the controversy over Hanon, because I share the doubts of some people. I have been using his exercises recently, and my facility has improved hugely, but I also wonder if I am losing the soul of my playing.

I am particularly interested to read that Chopin, one of the composers I most love and admire, was possibly against the finger-centric technique of 19th century teachers.

I have a dvd of Rubinstein playing the concertos, and it is limpid, articulated and - kind of empty - and I very specifically don't want to end up playing like that. John160251 (talk) 23:53, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
