Clean up[edit]

Gyre and Gimble[edit]

Tommy Steele was not discovered at the G&G, The Vipers Skiffle Group were. They went on to play at the 2i's, where Steele sometimes played with them, not at the Gyre and Gimble. He was discovered by Larry Parnes. Vera, Chuck & Dave 22:39, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Skiffle band[edit]

Steele & The Steelmen were not a "Skiffle Band" they were the first British "Rock n Roll Band". Does this, thier first hit, "Rock With The Caveman" sound anything like Skiffle? [1] Educated Guest (talk) 16:22, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Silly London visit claims[edit]

Whatever you think about the idea that he visited, http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7376248.stm tells us that Fike didn't visit London instead of Elvis. 129.31.1.137 (talk) 13:10, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well if you check the relevant site, Fike has indeed posted a claim that it was him and not Elvis. As for The Kenwright/Steele claim, all I can say is that Tommy Steele is renowned for playing very elaborate practical jokes, but making "Silly Claims" - most certainly not, and from what I can gather, he is very angry with Kenwright. I couldn't find a mention of Fike's visit to London on that site, could you provide a link that is straight from the horse's mouth and more reliable that the BBC? And as human beings excercising common sense, we'd have to say the idea that the most famous person in the world visited London, wandered around the parts of the city most flooded with tourists, accompanied by another famous person and was neither mobbed by adoring fans or noticed by a single other person is pretty silly. I've checked and Fike's post appears to have been taken down, so by all means replace it with the BBC one. One thing to bear in mind when considering Steele's claim, is that London was not flooded with tourists in 1958, it was however, flooded with City Gents, Stockbrokers etc and not ordinary people. The "type of person" in the areas mentioned, would not have been able to pull Steele out of a line up, let alone Elvis - It's not like he's saying he took him down the pub and Pie and Mash shop in Bermondsey, or The 2i's where of course, they most certainly would as you say, have been mobbed. Sorry, but the idea that the London of 1958 was "flooded with City Gents, Stockbrokers etc and not ordinary people" is laughable. The only area specifically identified is the Houses of Parliament, which is a long way from the City. Unless they were both in disguise, there will have been plenty of "ordinary people" who would have recognised Steele and/or Elvis. Nick Cooper (talk) 20:07, 14 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sunday Pictorial hoax as to why Tommy Steele didn't do National Service[edit]
