The term "White Karelia" is now used in some English-language sources (by Finns, as it seems). It seems to be a folk-etymological misinterpretation of Finnish/Karelian "Vienan Karjala": somebody has concluded that since the White Sea is "Vienanmeri" in Finnish/Karelian, "Viena" must mean "white". (It doesn't – most probably, the name is related to the river name Dvina/Vienanjoki.) Neither in Karelian nor in Russian is White Sea Karelia (Viena Karelia) called "White Karelia". The Winter War was forgotten in the article so I added it:

"In 1939 the Soviet Union attacked Finland (see: Winter War). In Peace of Moscow most of Karelia had to be handed over to the Soviet Union. About 400 000 people fled and had to be relocated."

I also pointed out that the standard-of-living gap between present Karelia and Finland is exeptionally big, apparently the biggest in the world. A world record should be mentioned, in my opinion.

An overwhelming majority of the Finns don't want Karelia back - the ones that did, the Karelians - are pretty much dead by now. I had to mention this because the article seems to imply otherwise.


This article now holds a standard that is comparable with many other Wikipedia articles. The Page history shows that there have been little editing here. Maybe it's time to put this page in place and move the other article to Karelia (province) or something?

New disambiguation solution is good, because term Karelia has never had clear meaning (East Karelia, Western Karelia = Finnish Karelia, Republic of Karelia, Russian Karelia, debat of returning Karelia (=borders of Treaty of Tartu), North Karelia, South Karelia, ...)

Map of traditional areas[edit]

Still there is not borders of 1939 near Salla and Kuusamo in this map. Why show this border in Karelian Isthmus and not in Salla and Kuusamo? Kahkonen 06:21, 2004 May 27 (UTC)

I guess I should answer this. So, do you think Salla and Kuusamo are part of Karelia? or only the parts that ended up in the Republic of Karelia? From a Finnish POV Salla and Kuusamo are not part of Karelia, but Lapland and Oulu/Ostrobothnia respectively. -- Jniemenmaa 07:24, 27 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
They are not, by Finnish POV, but there were a border in 1939 and 1944, so why not to draw this border? Kahkonen 05:26, 2004 May 29 (UTC)

And there had not traditionally been border between Ladoga Karelia and Northern Karelia (I think they are same), at least not following Moscow -40 border. Kahkonen 12:29, 2004 Jul 10 (UTC)
Even long before the winter war of 1939–1940. Ladoga Karelia and Northern Karelia actually were concidered as two distinct historic areas. But the border between them was not exactly, only roughly the same as the current state boundary. Ladoga Karelia belonged to the Viipuri Province (Viipurin lääni), whereas North Karelia belonged to the Kuopio Province (Kuopion lääni). Indeed, the border between them was originally the Swedish-Russian boundary of the Treaty of Nystad (1721). Earlier, both Ladoga and North Karelia had been parts of Käkisalmi County, which had belonged to the Novgorod Republic from 1323 on (Treaty of Nöteborg) and later to Russia, until it was annexed to Sweden in 1617 (Treaty of Stolbova).
But I think there is even another error on the map. On it, Karelian Isthmus seems to extend in West up to the current Finnish-Russian boundary. It should not. I think it is both geographically and historically totally incorrect to include any areas West of Vyborg Bay in the Karelian Isthmus, although this error seems by now been commonplace. But even on a map, it can be seen at the first sight that the isthmus extends in the West only to the line from Viipuri to somewhere near Käkisalmi on the coastline of Lake Ladoga. At the ends of this line, both the coastline of Finnish Bay and that of Lake Ladoga make a clear curve. What is West of this line, is historically part of South Karelia, although the current state boundary cuts it in two. -FKLS (talk) 08:06, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]


The Kymi River served as the western border of Karelia going back to medieval times. It appears that Many_Karelias.png attempts to highlight the region of the Karelian dialect via the region shown as "South Karelia", though even this is somewhat misrepresented. I propose that this map is updated or a new version is produced that accurately reflects historical Finnish Karelia. File Karelia_today.png could also be modified. Tourism[edit]
