Punches cameraman?[edit]

I've seen the episode with the interview with the Daytona Beach wrestlers (Season 2, Episode 6 of the HBO show), and although the person being interviewed does get very angry and push the microphone away, there's no evidence that he then punches the camera man. Maybe its featured on another show, or some extras segment... Can anyone provide a link or more information about this? -- Mfv2 22:09, 14 October 2005 (UTC).[reply]

I have seen this episode as well, and at least in the American DVD release, the wrestler does NOT punch the camera man. I'm also fairly positive that's not shown in any of the extras, either. Unless the punch is shown in a UK release of the show, that information is incorrect and should be removed. --Alex 01:29, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When Sacha Cohen was on the Conan O'Brien show they discussed the skit and Conan asked what happened after that, as the episode ended abruptly. Sacha responded that the kid grabbed the camera and punched the camaraman in the face.

Origins[edit]

I don't have exact dates but I know that Bruno was first used for short skits as filler on the Paramount Comedy Channel in the UK (this is also how 'Trigger Happy TV' began). I'm not sure of the exact dates but it seems that this would warrant a mention.

They were shown in 1998, thus predating both Ali G and Borat. Maybe they are on youtube?

Gay TV[edit]

I did not watch the Gay TV episode but don't you think it is a little different than exposed homophobia when people who are OK to talk to a clearly homosexual Bruno before TV cameras get upset when they are told that they would be on Gay TV? As I said I did not watch the episode but what is written in the article suggests that Bruno tells them of their appearence in Gay TV with a tone implying some sort of sexual objectification for the Gay audience. If that is really so, without condoning physical attacks, I would find the wrestlers' getting upset much more understandable than Sacha Cohen's behaviour who after all makes a living by making fools of unsuspecting people. I think either that part of the incidence should be made clearer or a more impartial tone should be adopted for describing Sacha Cohen's comedy. 150.216.151.84 20:40, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That "part of the incidence" is already clear enough. Since you haven't seen the episode, you have no way of knowing what "tone" Bruno used, so your objection is in bad faith. Name correction suggestion[edit]

    A reasonable question! A quick Google search tells the following (these are all among the top 40 ghits):
    Bruno: [1], [2], [3], [4], Brüno: [5], [6], [7]
    Looking at the sources currently used in the article:
    Bruno: [8], [9], [10], [11], [12], [13], [14], Brüno: [15], [16]
    (Number 6 was a red link 404, and numbers 8 and 12 didn't mention Bruno/Brüno at all.) Now, external links:
    Bruno: [17], [18], [19]. No Brüno, although the MySpace link (which doesn't work) has it in the URL.
    In addition, Allmovie uses "Brüno", as does IMDb: [20], [21].

  • Oppose per WP:MOSTM. We should spell Bruno the way it's commonly spelled in English for the same reason we avoid weird capitalization, symbols, etc in trade names. It doesn't matter how the company refers to itself or how many ghits the "fancy" version gets, for instance our article on E*TRADE is titled E-Trade. Removed bit[edit]

I've removed some of the section "Character Backstory":

The choice of Austria as the country of origin for the character does not appear to be based on any specific real or perceived characteristics of Austrian people, but more on most victims' unfamiliarity with Austria. To someone with a limited knowledge of other countries, or someone who may already have misconceptions about foreigners, Europeans, or gay men, Brüno's ludicrous appearance, behaviour and announcements may appear initially plausible, and may reinforce stereotypes. This is the same strategy as when Cohen makes the Borat character a national of Kazakhstan (like Austria, a large country but one not prominent on the world stage), but actually gives him characteristics of a range of cultural backgrounds, with little relation to real Kazakhs.

It isn't cited, and seems very much like Original Research to me. I think that its good stuff but, as an analysis and interpretation, it needs to be cited to that reliable source that noted these things. Actually, the stuff isn't so great. His repeated references to Hitler in the film, (what does he, that this is the second time that the world turned on the greatest Austrian for trying new things?) is his focus on specifically the country of Austria. Actually, do his references to Hitler in the movie (they really weren't in the tv show much, were they?) deserve a section, comparing\contrasting with Borat's antisemitism?--64.193.79.137 (talk) 08:20, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I hesitate to complain about someone's efforts to write something constructive, 64anon, but I do agree that there is an issue as to whether we are talking about the character of Bruno or instead about Sasha Cohen's method of characterizations. In the section on Ayman, the commentary states "....where he made reference to Ayman Abu Aita whom Brüno comically interviewed in the movie as a terrorist." The Ayman Abu Aita material has some serious WP:BLP issues. As of this writing, it makes claims about his affiliations which are not supported by the sources. "Reaction" section out of place[edit]
