Untitled[edit]

This page was created because I felt the Holidays and New Zealand articles would become too elaborate with duplicated information that is very specific to New Zealand if this page did not exist. I intend to reduce the information on holidays in the New Zealand article to just an overview. - kiwiinapanic 10:08, 8 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Commercial free TV[edit]

Is the reason TV is commercial free on Christmas, Easter Sunday and Good Friday (and ANZAZ morning I guess although I wasn't even aware TV was commercial free then :-P ) due to the same trading restrictions that prevent stores opening on these days? If so, someone should add it to the article. I could add it but given that I don't know (although it seems very likely) someone needs to confirm it first and I might not check back here for a while so it'll be easier if someone who knows can add it if it's true. School Terms[edit]

Deletion or cleanup of Proposals for abolition of holidays[edit]

It seems this section should either be deleted or drastically cleaned up. The tone is completely wrong and I was left wondering who these people that the writer is referring to. Waitangi dya & Anzac day[edit]

Quote: "Waitangi Day and ANZAC Day are always commemorated on the exact date, as they commemorate specific historical events. Apart from Good Friday the other New Zealand Statutory Holidays have been Mondayised."

Easter Sunday[edit]

Easter Sunday in New Zealand is not a public holiday; see for instance http://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/2003/0129/latest/DLM237120.html#DLM237120 (Holidays Act 2003) and http://www.ers.dol.govt.nz/holidays_act_2003/public.html (these list all the public holidays, and Easter Sunday isn't one of them). However, http://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/1990/0057/latest/DLM212363.html (Shop Trading Hours Act Repeal Act 1990) is the legislation preventing shops opening on Easter Sunday.

I have removed various sections from the article that specify (or imply) that Easter Sunday is a public holiday. However, I realise that that day, in having trading restrictions, is somewhat similar to a public holiday. I am torn between thinking all references to Easter Sunday should be removed (it not being relevant in Public holidays in New Zealand, and between mentioning it, and the fact that it is not a public holiday. The former is perhaps cleaner, and I shall be bold and do that, though if someone else disagrees by all means re-add it to the article.

As an aside, I am unsure about how to reference the fact that Easter Sunday is not a public holiday (there is no list of all of the non-public-holiday days). However, to anyone reading this, the links above should be convincing.Waltersom (talk) 08:22, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Provincial anniversary days[edit]

The article doesn't really explain how provincial anniversary days are determined. Since as it makes clear, they aren't legislated for and depend on local custom etc and in some cases it varies within the province this is somewhat confusing. Are they set by some government department (perhaps the DOL) I guess in consultation with the local community? Are they set by each of the regions that make up the former provinces? Is it theoretically up to each business (or whatever) to determine the day?

On the region point, the Provinces of New Zealand makes it clear the boundaries are different. But one thing that isn't clear is whether regions fit perfectly within provinces, or some regions cover more then one province (well I expect it's only likely to be 2 at most).

We're all Mondayised now[edit]

Northland Anniversary holiday?[edit]

Is the Northland Anniversary holiday officially observed? It's not mentioned on the Department of Labour's webpage about NZ public holidays.[1] I can't find an official source for it. I'm guessing it's what the Auckland Anniversary holiday is colloquially called in Northland, but with no official precedent. Robyn2000 (talk) 02:47, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Matariki[edit]

Matariki should not be added to the List of statutory holidays until it has been legislated for. This is premature. A bill will be introduced later this year to amend the Holidays Act. Theoretically this proposed bill could fail to pass. --Hazhk (talk) 02:01, 17 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
