Mention of Archery?[edit]

Why does this article mention archery throughout? jdb ❋ (talk) 22:53, 12 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Because I used the Archery at the Summer Olympics page as a template for making this one and was very tired when I did so and didn't make all the changes necessary. Think I've got it fixed now. -- Jonel 12:01, 13 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Baseball removed after 2008[edit]

Something should be added about how Baseball is being removed from the olympic program after 2008—Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.215.236.240 (talk) 21:15, 17 July 2006

It was in there in the "History section"; I've moved it up to a more prominent position. Thanks for the suggestion! -- Jonel | Speak 04:25, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Can the reason for this removal please be added to the article? Badagnani (talk) 01:50, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just added a few possibilities. — AjaxSmack 01:39, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but did the IOC not officially state what their reasons were? Badagnani (talk) 22:18, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No. Probably a mixture of all the reasons given, plus the fact that the Olympics are meant to be "the best" and instead its kind of unsupported by the US and MLB. Many sports have come into and out of fashion in Olympics. For instance there is no guarrantee BMX biking or Cross Country Cycling will remain an Olympic sport any more than Tug-Of War or Polo did.--Koncorde (talk) 04:01, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Syntax[edit]

Some of the writing is so off that I don't know what the writer was trying to convey. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 211.225.30.91 (talk) 23:10, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dubious[edit]

I don't know about the truth in 120,000 spectators. I've read elsewhere that the crowd number was 90,000 in the exhibition match. All 120,000 accounts have been noted as an estimate, and the official number noted in the 1936 Berlin Olympics Official Report, states it as 92,565.

120,000 would make it the largest ever attendance to a baseball game, which it is not. The largest international game was between Australia and the US during baseball at the 1956 Summer Olympics where 114,000 attended. The overall record stands as of 2008, the Red Sox and Dodgers got 115,000 in an exhibition match. - Fox News Source JRA_WestyQld2 Talk 09:06, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I did not pull that number out of thin air. I cited the source that states the attendance was 120,000. It's in Phil Lowry's book, Green Cathedrals, which was published by the Society of American Baseball Research in the 1980s. Do either of you have a source that states Lowry is wrong? (He might be.) Marty 67.173.237.220 (talk)

Click the link above for the Official Olympic Report, it states it as 92,565. Surely that's a more verifiable source? Also there are multiple sources stating that the highest Olympic attendance is 114,000. JRA_WestyQld2 Talk 02:49, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The 92,000 crowd may be accurate. Who compiled the report? (Sorry, the link isn't working.) However, I wouldn't simply dismiss the Society for American Baseball Research. SABR is widely recognized for its meticulous research into baseball history. Marty 67.173.237.220 (talk) 04:17, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The National Olympic Committee for the Berlin Olympics. It dates back to the 1930's, therefore surely more accurate. It has also been verified by the IOC. Google search for more reports if you want. Also Reichssportfeld (not Reichsportsfeld as spelt in the article), has Olympiastadion as the largest place to possibly have the event, which only had a capacity of 110,000 at the time, making the 120k number logistically impossible. JRA_WestyQld2 Talk 14:19, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unbalanced[edit]

The section "Elimination as Olympic Sport" is completely biased and uses sources that are opinionated columns rather than factual articles, the section includes "Pro-Europe bias of the IOC." and "Anti-american bias of the IOC." which are absurd claims considering every IOC member gets a vote. Another reason listed is "The way Major League Baseball tests and punishes its players for drugs" which is close to irrelevant considering Major League Baseball players did not compete in the Olympics anyway. Howevr it doesn't mention that Only 16 nations participated as a reason or only 6 Nations ever won medals in baseball, the lack of viewers and air time (even in the US). EquestrianAlex (talk) 02:09, 3 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Agreed. The section itself announces that it is entirely speculative. I will remove it. zadignose (talk) 03:40, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

1904?[edit]

Why does the first link to an Olympic baseball event take us to the 1912 Olympics, which article begins "Baseball had its first appearance at the 1912 Summer Olympics as an exhibition sport," yet THIS article claims a 1904 debut?zadignose (talk) 03:39, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It was 1904. Somebody just fumbled a link.GoxSox1989 (talk) 13:09, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Medalists list and Medal table do not fit[edit]

guess the medal table is worng? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.42.252.102 (talk) 14:31, 18 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Medals awarded during exhibition tournaments[edit]

Ok, baseball was an exhibition sport in 1984 and 1988. However, medals were indeed awarded during those tournaments, they just were not counted in the "official" medal table. As a matter of fact, USA Baseball does count those medals despite not being listed in the all-time medal table. Hence, 1984 and 1988 should be included in the table, albeit with a note explaining that fact. 24.42.55.61 (talk) 10:56, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

They were certainly awarded. The IOC says so in its official page. GoxSox1989 (talk) 13:05, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Medal tables do not include exhibition sports. The results of the exhibition tournaments are addressed in text. -- Jonel (Speak to me) 17:02, 16 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
