Historical Gap[edit]

Shouldn't there be some history between 1706 and 1931.

The article mentions that FD writes the Gambler there, but it does not mention the casino/vacation destination that it was during the 19th century.

Why did Baden-Baden get its double name? SCCarlson

I just did some research. The town's name was originally Baden, and in order to distinguish it from the other places called Baden in Switzerland and Austria, it was sometimes called "Baden in Baden" (since it was part of the margravate of Baden). This name was often shortened to Baden-Baden, which finally became the official name. I will add this to the article. -- Cordyph 18:11 Mar 6, 2003 (UTC)
Thanks. SCCarlson
So it's a bit like New York, New York? Loserdog3000 10:20, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The double name has dynastic reasons. In 1535 the territory of the original Margraviate of Baden was divided into Baden-Baden and Baden-Durlach. However, from 1594 to 1622, the Baden-Durlach line exercised de-facto rule over the Baden-Baden land. Finally, in 1771 the entirety of the Baden-Baden territory was inherited by the Baden-Durlach line. ♆ CUSH ♆ 13:13, 12 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Two humorous uses of the repetitious name:

  • There is a German tongue twister, "Wenn Baden-Badens Bademeister baden, baden Baden-Badener auch." That is to say, "When the lifeguards of Baden-Baden bathe, the people of Baden-Baden also bathe."
  • Peter Schickele's character P.D.Q. Bach is said to hail from the village of Baden-Baden-Baden.

Concerning the date 1931[edit]

I have ancestors listed in the 1930 US Census reporting their parents as immigrants from Baden-Baden. Since these reports were given to the Census taker in the first half of the year 1930, I find it disconcerting to see that Baden-Baden was not so named until 1931. Therefor I am adding the word 'officially' to the line about the name change. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 206.105.184.178 (talkcontribs) 08:34, July 14, 2004 (UTC)

As far as I know, Baden-Baden was known unofficially as such long before 1931. - According to my grandparents, yes.

A general comment - not much about the baths in the article! Exile 13:04, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Military history[edit]

As with so many pages on Germany, the amount of detail on military history and camps/barracks in or near the town is way out of proportion versus meaty historical stuff! wiki contributors would do themselves a major favour by thinking about the fact that there are other people in this world apart from people obsessed with recent military history.

Indeed. Unfortunately it's more difficult to come into contact with material like that without being able to speak the language :( Lethe 22:16, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Military, military, military[edit]

Regarding edit: 131.137.245.206 addition. Your contributions to this page are much appreciated, but (see comment above) is the balance right overall now for this page? Maybe you could add your information under a new section about institutions/organisations etc so that the history of Baden-Baden reads more than an account of Canadian involvement in Germany. Immigration[edit]

I am interested in the number of people from Baden-Baden who immigrated to the United States in the early to mid 1800's. Part of my family history shows that my ancestors came here from Baden-Baden but the wife didn't like it and presumably returned to Germany with her daughters, leaving the husband and sons in America. I'm interested to find out more about this family prior to their coming to America. It could not have been easy for a woman with female children to return to Europe during these times. What could have become of them? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.30.69.4 (talk) 23:07, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
