Computer game[edit]

"A sign of the album's influence and enduring popularity is that the 1998 computer game based on The War of the Worlds not only featured music from the album and alien war machines based on the illustrations on the album cover, but was actually called Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds."

That seems like a spurious argument to me. So a game based on the album is named after the album. This is surprising??? -- Lee M
My understanding is that the game was based on the novel, in which case it is indeed surprising that it was named after the album. (And even if I'm wrong and the game is based on the album rather than the novel, that in itself qualifies as a sign of the album's influence and enduring popularity.)

UKIP spoof[edit]

Neutrality[edit]

Screw You Nerds[edit]

So after making the decision to stop being a vandal and actually attempt to contribute something helpful to this website (Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of Spartacus) and then linking it to all the relevant pages (Jeff Wayne, TWOTW, etc), I was unimpressed to discover that within hours, every single link to the new page had been removed. Now, I'm not sure what it is you nerds expect of people, but my understanding of how this webpage works is that after a new page is created, you must link the relevant pages to it in order to make it readable... So, Spartacus will be the one and only attempt at joining this community. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go back to making fun of Kross (an example can be found here [1])...

Cleanup tag[edit]

Sections of the page do not read very well, and some of the text is poor - not up to standards. I will have a go at fixing some, if others will take on the rest!

Ending[edit]

This is how I and several others I know view the ending: the book is finished, yet here it now is happening in real life. I don't know how many feel this way or if any official word has ever been made to the contrary, so I'm not going to edit the main page. But I do think someone with more knowledge of this should think about this view, and hopefully, put it into the main article. By the way, best CD set EVER! North American Tour?[edit]

I can't find the answer to this question anywhere on the web, so I will ask it here: does Jeff Wayne have any plans to bring the live "War Of The Worlds" show to North America? I am so very disappointed that Jeff seems to want to keep the live show strictly in the UK and Europe (apart from that one jaunt to Australia). Granted, I understand that the "War Of The Worlds" album has only ever had a cult following here in North America, but it is a strong cult! The album has always been available for purchase over here---it's never been an import-only release---and there are *definitely* North American fans of the album who would love to see the show, myself included. When you listen to the album, the martians make the sound "ooh-la" which is transcribed as "ULLA" in the liner notes. "dub" is a style of music. It doesn't "mean" anything - it's more of a tribute/homage. Lime in the Coconut 14:42, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No Plot Synopsis[edit]

I'm not a regular Wiki user, so forgive any bad etiquette or formatting problems, but I had hoped this page would explain the plot, since this version is split into part one and part two, and, having not read the novel, I assume the plot has been simplified, therefore reading the plot at the novel's page would be inaccurate to Jeff Wayne's interpretation. As a personal example, I've lost disc two, and visited the wiki page hoping to read a synopsis of what happens. I think that's a reasonable expectation. You're quite right – the album and the novel are distinctly different versions of the story, and readers definitely shouldn't have to rely on the plot summary of one for information on the other. I'll see if I can write one up sometime in the next day or two. Incidentally, Wikipedia's album style guide doesn't say anything at all about plot summaries. This seems like an oversight to me, as there are plenty of concept album articles that would benefit from one. —Flax5 04:02, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, thanks for implicating my suggestion, and for doing it so quick! I think the summary is good; I had wondered if the unwritten rules would have it song-by-song or just one paragraph. I prefer one paragraph, selfishly, because I was looking for a summary of the album as a whole. So I suppose individual song summaries would be left to individual song articles. I'm surprised there isn't anything about concept albums having plot summaries, but as a new user, I don't know how to go about suggesting a change on that large a scale, and can't guarantee I could commit to helping write summaries for other concept albums. But for WotW, it feels good to think I helped improve a wiki article. Summary[edit]

This article does not meet the Good Article criteria. The main problems are:

  • Large sections of the article are unsourced and lack inline citations
  • There are only 12 references in the article. Four of these are from 'thewaroftheworlds.com', which is a primary source and a further three are chart listings. Another source used is Discogs, which is user-generated and therefore not considered to be a reliable source
  • The 'Plot' section relates to the book, which is not the subject of the article (and is completely unsourced)
  • The 'About the album' section, is a poorly written collection of statements without proper paragraphs and is largely unsourced
  • There are layout issues, including extensive lists (e.g. casts, track listings) and other WP:MOS violations

Since this will require a fundamental rewrite to meet the WP:GA standard and I do not think that can be achieved in the standard seven days, I'm afraid that I am going to fail the GA review at this time. Sorry. — sparklism hey! 14:57, 20 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]


Unsourced, original research, opinions[edit]

I have restored the edits I made to this article for the following reasons;

  • The reason given by the revert ("pointless tagging of information from the album's actual packaging".) Addressed only one alterations I made (and is wrong, see below).
  • I was addressing a number of points already indicated by the above GA Review.
  • The "Differences from Wells' Novel" section is entirely original synthesis. The problem with original synthesis is the reader has nothing to gauge its accuracy and it may be wrong. Particularly when it is not a comparison of texts, but a comparison of a book with a recording.
  • "The Eve of the War", "Thunder Child", and "The Spirit of Man" are the most recognised individual songs on the album." - Says who? Recognised by who? Has someone done a public survey? Removed.
  • "Most of the lyrics on the album were written by former Elton John lyricist Gary Osborne." - saying that this is on the album packaging does not help verify it to readers. That's the whole point of a citation. That's the point of tagging it, to get a cite.
  • "who was instrumental in bringing the recordings together" - if you are going to emphasis the involvement of one person, it can at least be cited. Neutralised.
  • "that help to illustrate the story from beginning to end." - Whether they "help" is an opinion. Illustrating the story tends to include the beginning and end, otherwise it wouldn't be the story. Removed opinion and verbosity.
  • "the unwieldy title" - in whose opinion unwieldy? Removed "unwieldy".
  • "many bonuses such as various" - how many bonuses constitute someone's opinion of many? Neutralised.
  • "a very limited run" - needless POV emphasis. How limited makes something very limited? I don't know, and neither does the reader. Removed "very".
  • "the huge success of the 2005 re-release" - more POV emphasis. Removed "huge".

Shouldn't it be noted somewhere that Jerry Wayne is Jeff Wayne's father?

Also I deleted what is either vandalism or a bizarre mistake where somebody replaced Julie Covington with Lorraine Read as the performer in the listing for "The Spirit of Man".

If not already, the second paragraph of the lede should be deleted.

After reading the above entry I still have no idea what ULLAdubULLA means and its supposed explanation, I for one still don't have a clue what "ULLAdubULLA" is supposed to mean or be. Anybody else know or can explain it? __209.179.9.58 (talk) 03:00, 6 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

2022 Dolby Atmos Remix?[edit]

Noted that the current article makes no reference to the Dolby Atmos version of this album, which at the time of writing is available on Apple Music (and possibly on other streaming services? Unconfirmed). This release is dated 21 March 2022. It it is very clearly a remix from the original tapes. It includes additional elements not present on the original release nor on subsequent remasters (including, but not limited to, owl and explosion Foley effects at the start of The Red Weed (Part 1)), and has partially-different vocal-takes in Forever Autumn and Brave New World. This version, at least on Apple Music, also incorrectly titles the track Dead London as Dead London (Part 1). (talk) 14:24, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
