Untitled[edit]

Hi! Do not know how to post my comment differently. Sorry about that. I changed 'pumpkin' in 'squash' in the 'tortelli di zucca' (Lombardia section). I am Italian (form ferrara where we have a similiar dish) and live in US. Italian word 'Zucca' corresponds to three different vegetables in US: pumpkin (the big ones used for Halloween and for pumpkin pies, it taste of nothing...), squash (tastier, the delicata and butternut are excellent to make italian recipes), gurds (only decoratives). Old discussions[edit]

For now this is little more than a growing category of italian foods. Once the list contains sufficient verbage, it can be rewritten to be a more thorough prosaic article. cheers -- Leon

I browsed through the page and looks to me as a big disaster. I just made a spot check and I found a lot of mistakes and bad editing. There should be rules and users should refrain from tampering with subjects they don't have experience about. If you have been in vacation on the lake Como and ate crispy focaccia, don't correct the page to suggest that: Maybe around the corner they do a soft focaccia. If in Croatia they do something similar to "prosciutto" don't add it to the page, otherwise we should add about the French jambon or the jamon Iberico. In addition there is a list of recipes, mainly seafood, that is pure nonsense. What I want to say is, food is part of a culture and if you are born in another country probably your vision is distorted. For example there are deep differences between the Italian cooking and the Italian-American one. In conclusion, editing this page looks like an almost desperate task. I will give it a try in the next future. Arrivederci pietro

Please have a go. Feel free to delete all the lists or move to List of Italian dishes and forget about them. I have been embarrassed about this article on one of the great cuisines of the world for ages. Justinc 10:38, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Every month someone adds another useless sentence to this article. I think its time for cleanup. Justinc 00:50, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I agree - is moving the list(s) to List of Italian dishes still an option? - AKeen 00:30, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yes; preserving the edit history is a slight issue; might be best to move the page, but not the talk page and then copy the cuisine stube at the top and then edit that. Will do it tomorrow if you like - its late in Europe now... Justinc 01:26, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like a good plant to move everything over - AKeen 16:33, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Unnecessarily long list[edit]

The list for Fish Dishes is really long and useless to anyone who doesn't speak Italian. Which should be most people in en. --Audiodude 02:54, 28 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Not only. Most of the recipe titles don't make any sense. Looks like somebody copied the index of some sort of italian fish cookbook and not even a good one. I will purge the list in the next few days leaving only the titles for traditoonal recipes and maybe add few ones. Then the next task would be to add the descriptions and/or recipes. --pietro

I think this list is WAY TOO LONG. This list should just have the basic and notable Italian dishes that are significant enough to be listed here. Honestly, not every dish known to be served in any Italian restaurant needs to be listed here. This article could really use some cleaning up as well as some translation. Agreed? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.231.208.19 (talk) 01:36, 11 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Some revisions to the antipasti and soups section[edit]

I did some cleaning. Deleted: 1. Spring soup (There is no such a thing in Italian cooking), 2. of rice and celery, after the minestrone link, 3. Condiments for seasoning minestrone, it was a repetition of the minestrone link. 4. Minestrone of rice and cabbage & Minestrone alla Cappuccina. They are not traditional Italian dishes. I changed Tuscan Soup into Beans Soup, and I will add information later.

I suggest the recipes from -The Cook's Decameron: A Study In Taste etc- be moved to a different location. They don’t make any sense here.

I think Italian sauces should be a different category separated from soups.

I aslo cleaned the fish list. There is more work needed. --pietro

Improvement Drive[edit]

The article Culture of Italy has been listed to be improved on Wikipedia:This week's improvement drive. You can add your vote there if you would like to support the article.--Fenice 14:21, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

There had previously been some talk of redirecting the gigantic list of dishes to List of Italian dishes and expanding "Italian cuisine" into a comprehensive article. Any thoughts? - AKeen 19:53, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Go on, just do it. Sorry, havent written anything - only have one historical Italian cuisine book and I havent read it yet. Justinc 01:35, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have moved the list to this page and now the Italian cuisine article can be expanded - AKeen 03:08, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Merge Tag[edit]

Recently someone suggested that this article be merged back into Italian cuisine. A while ago a consensus was reached that this section be merged OUT of Italian cuisine, due to its extreme length, and little specific information about Italian cuisine. It should stay as its own page. - AKeen 14:33, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do not merge it. Its a list. Italian cuisine needs some time to be worked on to be a real aricle not a stupid list of dishes. Thats not cuisine. Justinc 01:48, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Italian Bread?[edit]

I came to wikipedia looking for what I would call Italian bread. When I used firefox to look for 'Italian bread wikipedia' it brought me to garlic bread. That article brought me here. But what is the typical Italian bread that I see in the US called? Like this: http://sydfish.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/italian_bread_500.jpg or http://www.nps.k12.nj.us/science/philipe_chem/italianbread.jpg There should be SOME sort of mention of this kind of 'Italian bread' somewhere. It's very popular where I am from (new york). I don't know if it's originally _talian or not. I would think so. 149.15.75.191 (talk) 21:01, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

According to Delicious Italy: "There are over 350 bread types in Italy of which 250 are readily available. We have listed around 100 below".http://www.deliciousitaly.com/visualizza.php?Id=542&area=it Stwiso (talk) 21:43, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for bringing this up. Wikipedia tries to operate on the principle of least astonishment. You found an obvious gap. I am beginning to research this, but my first efforts are coming up empty. In general, for immediate answers, please use the WP:reference desk. I have already posted the question there.—Novangelis (talk) 21:54, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
N.b. The article presently has a Pane (bread) section. North America1000 16:38, 21 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Last to links[edit]

The last to link that lead to disambiguated page are confusing as there is 2 or 3 different grapes used for wines and no link for anything non-people or city related on the other--Breawycker (talk to me!) Review Me! 22:23, 7 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Disappointed[edit]

I came to this article looking for what I would call some italian fish recipes. This looks like someone just copied it from an idex of a book and there are hardly any discription. I should like to see some more discriptions added please!

Italics[edit]

Moved from User talk:Bazza 7

Bazza (talk) 12:46, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Now, I italicised Zeppole at "Zippuli" because it was italicised at "List of Italian dishes", but, JackkBrown, you changed it back. The page "Zeppole" currently uses a random variety of styles. What's going on? Jean-de-Nivelle (talk) 15:34, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Jean-de-Nivelle: "Zippuli" and "zeppole" are two different dishes. JackkBrown (talk) 15:40, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I understand that. But at the page "Zippuli" is a link to "Zeppole". I italicised it. You removed the italics. But the link at "List of Italian dishes" is italicised. Jean-de-Nivelle (talk) 15:46, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jean-de-Nivelle: the solution would be to correct my mistake, I got confused with these two pages with similar names; thank you if you do. JackkBrown (talk) 15:49, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jean-de-Nivelle: wait, I'll correct the page, because "zippuli" is not "zeppole". JackkBrown (talk) 16:00, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jean-de-Nivelle: not true, in the List of Italian dishes page "zippuli" links to the zippuli page and "zeppole" (pastry) to the zeppole page; everything is correct; perhaps the "zeppole" page should be italicised, but I'm not sure. Just answer the question: "zeppole" are common in the English language? If yes, remove the italics from the List of Italian dishes page, otherwise edit the "zeppole" page by writing "zeppole" in italics throughout the page. JackkBrown (talk) 16:07, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@JackkBrown: Slow down! Take a deep breath. Look at the page "Zippuli". Under "See also" is a link to "Zeppole". I italicised the link in this edit. You removed the italics in this edit. The page "Zeppole" currently uses a jumble of styles.
I would personally italicise "zeppole" and "zippuli" because I don't consider them to be common terms in English. However, I'm British, and there are Italian terms that are more common in American English because of the stronger influence of the Italian American community. That's why I didn't simply edit "Zeppole" to impose one particular style. These things can be subtle. Jean-de-Nivelle (talk) 16:19, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Italics or not?[edit]

Are "capocollo", "panna cotta", "parmigiana, "penne rigate", "peperoncino", tortelli" and "tortelloni" common in the English language? Should it be written in italics or not? JackkBrown (talk) 14:23, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Why don't you look them up in an English dictionary? Here's one: [1]. Bazza (talk) 16:32, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This page probably breaks WP:NOTDIRECTORY, being an indiscriminate list of the names of just about anything anybody has every cooked or cooked with in Italy. We have WP:CATEGORIES for collating items which have their own article, so what is the purpose of this list article? Bazza (talk) 16:41, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Bazza 7: this page is very very useful for expanding the various pages of Italian regional cuisines (some foods were never mentioned by the British and Americans). JackkBrown (talk) 17:05, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's not what list articles are for. Currently, the article is just an ever-growing exhausting list of mostly unverified Italian names, and I don't see what value it adds to Wikipedia. Bazza (talk) 18:18, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In my opinion we should identify the encyclopedic dishes, and link them, if they do not have the article on Wikipedia in English, with the {{ill}} template. Non-encyclopedic dishes should therefore be removed. --LukeWiller (talk) 18:27, 28 December 2023 (UTC).[reply]
@LukeWiller I concur, this is quite lengthy so generally dishes without articles should be trimmed. Maybe keep some if they can be linked to an Italian Wikipedia article. This is especially true for topics with subarticles. We don't need the names of every pasta shape or every cheese here. Just because something is a recipe with a name doesn't mean it has to be here or else this gets indisciminate. Many items are duplicated between food type and the regional dishes, but perhaps some of those should be move to pages like Lombard cuisine if they aren't emblematic of Italian cuisine. The Herbs and spices list is pretty generic! Reywas92Talk 20:30, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Reywas92 Yes, in broad terms I agree with you: the article has too many dishes that are not encyclopedic, and we need to do some tidying up. I would only keep the dishes that have an article on Wikipedia in English or, if they don't have one, the dishes that have an article on Wikipedia in Italian using the {{ill}} template. Personally, I would eliminate the chapters on regional dishes (here the topic is Italian cuisine), keeping only the dishes of Italian national importance (which should be moved, if not already present as you rightly pointed out, to the relevant chapter to which they belong). The chapters on herbs and spices should also be eliminated, as they are off-topic, given that the article deals with food and dishes, not ingredients. --LukeWiller (talk) 22:27, 18 April 2024 (UTC).[reply]

"Wines" paragraph[edit]

The "Wines" paragraph should be expanded (in the meantime I added "Vin Santo"). JackkBrown (talk) 12:16, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How is a wine a "dish"? Bazza 7 (talk) 12:47, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Bazza 7: the paragraph was already there, I didn't add it. In any case, I wrote "and drinks" in the title of the main paragraph (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_Italian_dishes&diff=prev&oldid=1213512901). Thank you for noticing. JackkBrown (talk) 14:23, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not randomly[edit]

@Reywas92: if you want to delete some images, you shouldn't do so at random, but think carefully about which ones to delete and which not; if you have already done so, congratulations. JacktheBrown (talk) 22:20, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have restored three images and removed three: the number of images is the same as before, so if I will be reverted it's bad faith. JacktheBrown (talk) 22:58, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, failing to WP:AGF before anything happened? Of course I didn't remove them at random, I removed those that were duplicative or poorly illustrative. The same piadina image and the same pasta alla norma image were literally used twice, and the article doesn't need 13 images of pasta shapes, two of margherita pizza, two of vineyards, four of wine bottles, etc. I removed the one you restored of Frittelle because it had a logo in the corner but whatever. I'd say keep removing more. Reywas92Talk 15:18, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Reywas92: before removing others, we need to reach a consensus. I and LukeWiller are the main contributors to this page, so check with us first. JacktheBrown (talk) 15:21, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
LOL you don't WP:OWN the page! I'll let you take the next stab but 119 left is a lot that make the page less readable on mobile Reywas92Talk 15:27, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Reywas92: let's all three try to reach a consensus first, otherwise there will be useless edit wars; that's the point, I'm aware that I don't own any pages. JacktheBrown (talk) 15:31, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Reywas92: thank you for removing the images that weren't good enough, you only made three mistakes, but otherwise you did a GOOD job. JacktheBrown (talk) 15:27, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Mistakes? You just had a difference in opinion to prefer farfalle over fusili, get out of here. You just made a mistake of adding back the pecorino image when there's already one of pecorino in the Ingredients section as well as pictures of asiago and parmigiano (and a second of parmesan under Ingredients). Why does this need so many pictures of similar-looking hard cheeses? Reywas92Talk 16:06, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Reywas92: attention, "get out of here" is a personal attack or, in any case, a rude phrase. JacktheBrown (talk) 16:19, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No it's not. You should get out of here with the idea that my removals of redundant images and an image with a logo were mistakes. Reywas92Talk 16:24, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
