Fellow in American Institute of Architects?[edit]

Zaha Hadid is not listed as a Fellow in the AIA directory of Fellows. Perhaps she received some AIA Award, but she does not appear to be an AIA Fellow.Sullivanesque (talk) 03:38, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Architect?[edit]

The title conceptual artist would be more appropriate for this lady, placing her amongst other minimally- or questionably-talented artists (sic) such as Mrs John Lennon.

Appallingly bad work: for example, the people who once worked in Vitra Fire Station - before its use changed to that of a museum showcasing part of the local collection of chairs..... - said that it was the most inappropriately designed and woefully inadequate building they could possibly imagine for the purpose. The locals liken it to a municipal toilet; one cannot help but sympathise with that critique.

There is a good reason why she is "...underrepresented in the brick and mortar world...", particularly in her adopted home, the UK, where in a quarter of a century no clients have agreed to convert her proposals into real structures. The UK has enough disfunctional, incoherent, cold and windswept monolithic concrete carbuncles awaiting demolition to be replaced by a building designed by a proper architect. 81.105.27.137 15:16, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just a quick hint: few weeks ago, Hadid's latest building was opened: "Phaeno" at Wolfsburg, Germany. (a science centre). quite celebrated, it shows her "style" developping - from "fragmentation" towards a new kind of "entity". the building was constructed of a specific and new-created kind of concrete - could be moulded in one pour (!) besides, Hadid participates at the (re?)construction of "fiera di Milano" (Milan fair) - masterplan by Daniel Libeskind. though I'm not sure if they already started with it (competition 2004, completion - planned - 2014)

This should be about facts, not opinion. For that matter this discussion is, quite rightly, irrelevant to the actual article. Sep 2011

Yes, how did this get overlooked in the new xenophobia era in the US? I tell you, in my opinion, the fluid flow of Arabic design is on an upward trend and the western world ought to take a lesson. She was only nominally a Muslim (see I don't do nice), so it is completely irrelevant. Wikipietime, I also see no indication that her design is Arabic at all. In fact, her design bears more of a resemblance to the works of Frank Lloyd Wright and even Gaudi. There is no evidence that she was a particularly pious Muslim in her life nor that Islam influenced her work. And yet, Gaudi was quite vocal about how Catholicism influence his work but we don't talk about him as a "Catholic architect". Wynand.winterbach (talk) 14:36, 2 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please spare us the PC nonsense - the world has been talking about Gaudi as a "Catholic architect" for at least the last 100 years, some even calling him "God's Architect". He's even been nominated for sainthood! If you can find even a single source stating Hadid's work resembles Wright or Gaudi, I'll eat my keyboard - and my printer. Eli and Edythe Broad Museum[edit]

The article lists the Eli and Edythe Broad Museum at Michigan State University as a "completed project". Groundbreaking ceremonies were held in March 2010 and the project is expected to be completed sometime in 2012.24.11.148.36 (talk) 05:00, 3 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Glass[edit]

"In June 2011, had her own unexpected bungle at "Glasstress," one of the Biennale's most highly anticipated collateral events. "Glasstress," now in its second iteration, invites artists who may not traditionally work in glass to create original glass designs. This year's participants included Kiki Smith, Vik Muniz, Tony Oursler, and Hadid. However, Hadid couldn't fully execute her large-scale glass construction in time for the show. The curators were forced to display a few-year-old Hadid fiberglass sculpture instead. (Whether or not fiberglass actually counts as glass is up for debate.) The wall text tried to redeem Hadid's failure by spinning it as an important reminder of the laborious and unpredictable nature of glass. [6]"

How strange for an artist that there is nothing about her artistic proclivities or views that she might bring to bear with her architecture. Is she modernist? traditionalist WHAT?? "Iraqi-born British architect"[edit]

This description in problematic. It may be accurate (she was born in Iraq and held a British passport) but ultimately identity is personal issue and she identified as Iraqi. I think the intro should just say "Iraqi architect".--الدبوني (talk) 13:41, 15 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Reputation[edit]

From the sources that have been cited, there seems to be a tendency towards negative criticism. All of the citations and quotes are negative. Can we not have more balance?

Well, a few weeks ago, before I added some bits of authors' praises for her works, it sounded like the page was written by a rival company or a jealous colleague or something like that. I agree with Tibetibet. I'm not an architect, and I'm not sure I know critics' consensus on her works. Maybe the woman is controversial in some inner circles of architects or something... But if a person working in a field like architecture (not a pop singer) receives that much notice and criticism, then maybe she does something really notable that perhaps can only be estimated neutrally after some time. Just introduced some more positive opinions.

Thanks for your comments and additions. There seems to be more of a balance now. From what I've read of her work, my sense is that she attracted critics because she was unapologetic and strident as an architect and being a woman (and a pioneering one in a profession dominated by male 'star architects'), that rubbed off wrongly on some people. The negative citations I'm referring to are these sources, one of them general and three of them specific:
"Hadid's architectural language has been described by some as "famously extravagant" with many of her projects sponsored by "dictator states".[63] Rowan Moore described Hadid's Heydar Aliyev Center as "not so different from the colossal cultural palaces long beloved of Soviet and similar regimes". Architect Sean Griffiths characterised Hadid's work as "an empty vessel that sucks in whatever ideology might be in proximity to it".[64] Art historian Maike Aden criticises in particular the foreclosure of Zaha Hadid's architecture of the MAXXI in Rome towards the public and the urban life that undermines even the most impressive program to open the museum."
I'd say the first sentence of that paragraph is not appropriate since it characterises her work in a general way by using the word "some" (the quoted words come from one person, Michael Murphy). And there are many other architects who do projects in "dictator states" like China (and they don't receive the same amount of attention).

I understand now. Reality for the lone woman winner in many traditionally male areas. I know just one male starchitect who attracts attention for working for dictator states, and that is only because he has the misfortune of being the son of Nazi Germany's master architect and Minister of Armaments and War Production.

Hmm, interesting, did not know that. Seems to run in the family! Other starchitects who've done projects in dictator states like China that I know of are Herzog and de Meuron, Rem Koolhaas and Bjarke Ingels Group.
