1821 – Peruvian War of Independence: Argentine general José de San Martín declared the independence of Peru from the Spanish Empire.
1917 – In New York City, the NAACP and church and community leaders organized a silent march (newsreel footage featured) of at least 8,000 people to protest violence directed towards African Americans.
1976 – An earthquake registering 7.6 M_w, one of the deadliest in history, devastated Tangshan, China, and killed at least 240,000 people.
2001 – At the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, Australian Ian Thorpe became the first swimmer to win six gold medals at a single FINA world championship.

Tisha b'Av is the ninth day of the month of Av in the Hebrew Calendar--it doesn't fall on the same Gregorian day every year. (I assume someone meant "not a legal holiday", but that's an easy fix if the entry belongs at all.) Vicki Rosenzweig

Protection?[edit]

This article has had less than 50 edits in the last month. If you look at an article like January 23 there were 50 edits in the last week. Births and deaths[edit]

In accordance with the guidelines, I've started weeding the Births and Deaths sections by removing entries for celebrities with 0-4 articles in other languages. Where possible, these have been transferred to the relevant Year in Topic articles. As well as making the lists more manageable, this will help with the globalization effort.
