Untitled[edit]

The article is named "Tony Goldwyn" while the first line says "Anthony Howard Goldwyn is". Are they the same person? If so, could any one clarify this more? -- Taku 17:43, Nov 22, 2004 (UTC)

Related to Samuel Goldwyn?[edit]

Is he related to the Samuel Goldwyn? That should be mentioned then. On Imdb are comments about this saying he is the grandson of Samuel Goldwyn. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001282/board/nest/59769493

Voicing?[edit]

I am rather convinced that Tony Goldwyn is voicing Prince Arthas in the Warcraft III game, but cannot confirm this. I only got the suspicion because his voice in "The Last Samurai" bears almost too much resemblance to the voice of Arthas. Can anyone confirm / deny this?

Categories[edit]

Anonymous editors keep adding the following categories to this article: American Actors of Russian Descent, American Jews, Polish American Jews, and Russian American Jews. I've reverted the edits a number of times (with explanations), but they keep coming. Unfortunately, unlike other assertions, categories aren't "sourced." However, as far as I can tell, Goldwyn's father, Samuel Goldwyn, Jr., was Jewish, and his mother was not, or at least there's no evidence she was. Therefore, he doesn't belong in any of the Jewish categories unless there's some evidence that he identifies as being Jewish. Goldwyn's paternal grandfather, Samuel Goldwyn, was born in Poland, but there's no evidence of Russian ancestry (except that Poland was part of the USSR). Therefore, unless there's some evidence to the contrary, he doesn't belong in the Russian categories.

For the moment, I've left the categories alone because, short of blocks, I can't stop the editors from putting them back in. However, I invite comments on this issue. If anyone has any evidence for these categories, please say so. Otherwise, I will escalate the issue, so the categories remain out.--Bbb23 (talk) 22:57, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I came to this from Bbb23's request for editor assistance. I just removed the contested categories again. The problem is that this is a biography of a living person, and as such all content needs to be aggressively and reliably sourced. More IPs added them back. I reverted the changes and requested semi-protection of the article. The article is now semi-protected for two weeks. Hopefully, after the semi-protection ends, the IPs won't resume their behavior.--Bbb23 (talk) 01:15, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
To correct what Bbb23 said a little - Tony Goldwyn's paternal grandfather was Jewish, but his paternal grandmother - actress Frances Howard - wasn't Jewish. All Hallow's Wraith (talk) 17:33, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's a little more complicated than that. Tony's mother was apparently not Jewish. As you say, Tony's father was apparently born of a non-Jewish mother and a Jewish father. According to the Jewish religion, Tony was not Jewish because his mother was not Jewish and because there's no evidence that he converted to Judaism (we don't even have to look back any futher). However, according to others (like me who thinks the Jewish rule is archaic), Tony would be partly Jewish based on his father's mixture. In any event, because there's no evidence that Tony identifies himself as Jewish, he doesn't belong in a Jewish category.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:50, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Please note that the rules of whether someone is considered Jewish vary in the United States by denomination. You are going according to the Orthodox definition of who is considered Jewish. Note that Reform denomination judges someone to be Jewish if one of their parents is Jewish. By this definition, Tony's father would be Jewish because of his father, and then Tony would be Jewish because of his. As the editor below points out, self-identification is most important, but if one looks strictly at parentage, it depends on which denomination's rules you are following so it would be appropriate to have the Jewish tag. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.158.249.233 (talk) 05:55, 29 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, the religious rules aside and for the purposes of a BLP, what frequently matters most is how the subject self-identifies. Unfortunately, the semi-protection on the article has expired, and the category additions have resumed. I have again requested semi-protection of the article, but in looking at the latest IP to add the category, I noticed a pattern of the IP adding ethnic categories to all sorts of articles. See here I've put two warnings on the IP's talk page, but I don't think the IP reads them. I've reverted a few of the changes to other articles, but I'm not going to go through the whole list. Should I request a block of the IP? Not sure how much good that will do anyway. Comments as to how to rectify the problem would be welcome.--Bbb23 (talk) 19:41, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
