Romanesque?[edit]

Woodcarving of a pilgrim[edit]

Hej folks, I'm wondering whom the woodcarving with the subtitle "Pilgrim" depicts. I don't think that this is a pilgrim because I think at the time the church was built pilgrimage where unknown in Norge. Also, a pilgrim with bishop's staff would be an unusual picture. Could it be that this is the apostle Saint Matthias (a traditional pilgrim's symbol from Abbey of St. Matthias in Trier can be found here)? He is usually depicted with an axe and as an apostle he was sort of a bishop so this would explain why he has the staff but not the mitra. Maybe he is also a missionary bishop of the time, like St. Sigurd. Or it could be Saint Botvid, who wasn't a Bishop but is also depicted with an axe (thoug also with a fish). The axe is the usual attribute of the Norwegian Saint Olav. Whether this particular image represents Saint Olav is more than I can say (the figure seems to lack obvious royal attributes), but the Norwegian context would at least make that more likely than Saint Botvid, who was mostly a Swedish local saint. Not sure what to do with the bishop's staff, though. The Norwegian (bokmål) article on the church currently claims that the figure is a "bishop or possibly a pilgrim".

Printed sources exist (see the bibliography in the Norwegian version) that presumably discuss the church in detail, and that is probably the best place to look for a better explanation. --Hegvald (talk) 01:05, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Redundant infobox[edit]

I don't understand why the World heritage infobox was removed so I put it back in to create consistency with other World heritage entries. I made a bit of a mess of how the other graphics sit on the page but I am not sure how to fix that.
