Dear Editor:

Thank you for your careful (and fast, I must say) protection of the copyright, etc., on the text I just added for Meru, Kenya.

In this case, however, I am the sole author of the similar article on Meru on the RCBOWEN website. If necessary, this can be confirmed with Rich Bowen. I first wrote the article for Meru a fair amount of time ago, and just today (7/14/04) tried to edit the article to what I have just posted here in wikipedia, but I do not know at this moment whether my edits on the RCBOWEN website went through. I served as a volunteer teacher in Meru through a missionary program in the late 60's/early 70's, I love Meru and Kenya, and I really hope you will allow the text to go forward.

The Meru article is quite good, but it is just not possible (and neither permissible) to write about Meru agriculture without mentioning the most important (and most lucrative) cash crop, namely Miraa. I suggest that this be added.

close paraphrasing; needs checking to see how extensive it is.[edit]

This article has parts which are very closely paraphrased from [1]. This can be a problem under both our copyright policies and our guideline on plagiarism. While facts are not copyrightable, creative elements of presentation – including both structure and language – are. For an example of close paraphrasing, consider the following:

This deviates from the copyrighted source y only a few words.This is an example; there are other passages that similarly follow quite closely.

As a website that is widely read and reused, Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously to protect the interests of the holders of copyright as well as those of the Wikimedia Foundation and our reusers. Wikipedia's copyright policies require that the content we take from non-free sources, aside from brief and clearly marked quotations, be rewritten from scratch. So that we can be sure it does not constitute a derivative work, this article should be revised to separate it further from its source. The essay Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing contains some suggestions for rewriting that may help avoid these issues. The article Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2009-04-13/Dispatches also contains some suggestions for reusing material from sources that may be helpful, beginning under "Avoiding plagiarism".

If this content (added here) is not rewritten, then it may need to be removed. The article should also be checked for copying and close paraphrasing to other sources as well.
