I wonder if a Sussex Co. maven could elaborate on its unique relationship to slavery and the civil war? According to the History page that's linked, the Emancipation Proclamation did not apply to northern states, and Delaware was a northern slave state. http://www.sussexcountyde.gov/about/history/general/index.cfm?action=1800s

Name[edit]

Is it named after the UK county of Sussex? Or some person called Sussex? There should be a sentence or two in the article on the derivation of the name, surely? 86.133.212.19 (talk) 17:02, 24 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The old Proprietory Deeds from the Penn Family (which had also owned Delaware at one time) refer to "the counties of New Castle, Kent, and Sussex Upon Delaware." I love the old fashioned sound of that, but I'm not sure if the intention is to refer to all three as being "upon Delaware," or just Sussex. PurpleChez (talk) 19:33, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
