You could find an article based on the "1911 encyclopedia" and steal and adapt whatever boilerplate text they use for that. DreamGuy 23:43, Apr 6, 2005 (UTC)
All old text and out of copyright - just acknowledge the source and that's fine.Brookie 11:40, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Turgid English[edit]

I have tried to modernise the language - as it was pretty dull! 11:39, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I think this section shoudl be removed - it's unreadable an uninformative. The link to the external site should surely suffice.--JBellis (talk) 19:28, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Further to my comment, an indication of the accuracy of the text could be taken from the statement 'highest ground in England'. OS puts it at 134m, somewhat lower than Bardon Hill highest place in Leicestershire never mind any further afield.--JBellis (talk) 19:48, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reqphoto[edit]

Why - there's not much to see?--JBellis (talk) 19:28, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ancient Monument[edit]

Some clarification needed on what part is actually designated as an Ancient Monument? I would guess that only the Venonis is included?--JBellis (talk) 19:28, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Parishes etc[edit]

Hi @G-13114 Nice to meet you, and good to collaborate to improve this article. Just one thought on putting the parish boundaries in the "today" section. The parish boundaries are very ancient, predating the county division, so i think it is good to mention that various parishes did meet at the High Cross, maybe without listing them all, in the intro section. The book by Phythian-Adams that I've added to the citations - frustratingly not online - is a detailed argument about the deep history of the parish boundaries of the villages around High Cross, arguing the boundaries can be traced in part back to the Roman era. Certainly they predate the Danelaw, which led to the Warwickshire/Leicester border at Watling Street.

Also - this may be petty - but as a Warwickshire person, I slightly object to the title of the article being High Cross, Leicestershire!

That's interesting, I didn't know that. I just thought that the lead paragraph shouldn't be cluttered with tangental information which could be deeper in the article. Though if you have a better idea on what to do with it feel free. I suppose technically the county border runs along the south of the A5 so the actual centrepoint of the crossroads are in Leicestershire, though it doesn't entirely do justice to the geography of the place. Though I can't think of an alternative title. G-13114 (talk) 20:11, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
