Writing style[edit]

The article needs converting from colloquial and prescriptive talk to good prose (I've done some, but it needs more) - MPF 22:21, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I'm going to work on it...but be warned, I'm going to be ruthless. I'll try not to go to far. Do you have the ability to revert it back somewhat if you find my edits objectionable? Balletgirl313 13:49, Jun 5, 2005 (UTC)

Go ahead! I also reckon it needs ruthless editing. Don't blame you for giving up half way through (I did too). If need be, over-removals can be rescued from the page history - MPF 20:10, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I tried to make the fertilizer section read a bit better... don't know if it worked though. Hopefully I didn't make it worse.--zenobia 20:19, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

About half to 3/4 of this text could just be deleted. It's impossible to give general guidelines for "houseplants" when that covers such a huge range of species, genera, and families. Detailed cultural information should go under the individual plants. MrDarwin 13:39, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Usage of the word 'energy'[edit]

Please do forgive me if I foul this up, as I'm a bit new at this. If someone finds the time, I'm fairly sure the sentence 'Through the process of photosynthesis, plants use light to make energy.' (which can be found under lighting), should read something like, '..., plants use light to store energy.' Or perhaps, '..., plants convert radiation to chemical energy for later use.' I hope this helps.

Better images?[edit]

This article needs a few better pictures. I don't have a handy digital camera. Any takers?

dino 20:41, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do you think it just needs better images of houseplants or do you also want some sort of detailed photos that show things like common damage, wilting plants (underwatering), and specialized containers? Nautile 20:05, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ugh, I wasn't thinking so detailed. Just better images. Agree? Disagree? Other opinions? I'm open.

WayneRay 21:58, 4 April 2006 (UTC)WayneRay I am scanning my horticultural photography collection and will try to put up a few photos asap. [1] Wiki Media link[reply]

I've added a picture of golden pothos, probably the most common houseplant ever. I'll be on the lookout for more. Sam 01:32, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Polystyrene[edit]

Why are pieces of polystyrene sometimes added to houseplant soil? Drutt 07:58, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I found some information here. — Sam 15:10, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting, so it's used in place of Perlite -- In horticulture it makes composts more open to air, while still having good water-retention properties; it makes a good medium for hydroponics. Drutt (talk) 06:39, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Quick Suggestions[edit]

This article has definitely improved, but I'm not sure we need a bullet point summary. Also, I think that the article should be turned in a more factual direction, away from guidelines and recommendations. See Wikipedia is not a manual, guidebook, or textbook. I've done some editing, but it's certainly not an overhaul. --Vlmastra 03:17, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted paragraph[edit]

The paragraph on growing plants in a vase and "crystals" (what are they, exactly?) needs to be clarified if it is to be a lasting addition to the article. It seems to describe a particular manufacturer's method of hydroculture, which is discussed already in the Houseplant#Alternative grow methods section. Additionally, it carries too much a tone of a how-to, which is not the encyclopedic style Wikipedia is striving for. – Sam 15:04, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is simply an advertisement for this site. English version. --Vlmastra 17:01, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That paragraph, at least as written, makes no sense whatsoever. It is not censorship to take it out (and it cannot be rewritten because it's not at all clear what the editor who keeps adding it is trying to say). MrDarwin 15:23, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Pot plant"[edit]

"Pot plant" redirects here. The phrase is most commonly used to describe any houseplant, but it's also a slang term for a marijuana plant. Making Pot plant a dismabig seems a bit unnecessary, but I'm not sure how to incorporate it into this article. 131.111.245.195 (talk) 12:57, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I took care of that. See Template:Redirect to learn how. --Damian Yerrick (talk | stalk) 16:53, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am not a potted plant[edit]

Perhaps some mention of the political usage of the term should be added here? Hcobb (talk) 17:43, 21 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Article should not be a how-to guide[edit]

Wikipedia is not a how-to guide. Much of the instructions for growing house plants in this article needs to pared away. Jojalozzo 01:14, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Are Houseplants Cultivars?[edit]

Hello, I am asking, are houseplants cultivars? are they bred for for desired traits, so they could adapt indoors? or are they plants that was not a cutivar? i am intrigued to know this! BloxyColaSweet (talk) 21:32, 12 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
