Some info has been added, and more could be quite easily by people who know more about snakes thn I do. Grutness|hello? 00:50, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Mergeto/from[edit]

The article Bismarck ringed python ought be be merged into this one, since Bothrochilus is a monotypic genus. This article can then cover both the genus and the species, with redirects for the species and any number of common names that may apply to it. Seen from the point of the taxonomic hierarchy, it's the most logical place to put information on this snake. After that, I'll be happy to add the necessary taxonomic (synonymy + redirects) and geographic range data. --Jwinius 00:59, 8 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nardoa redirect?[edit]

Why does Nardoa redirect here when it's on this list? Jourdy288 (talk) 18:08, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Look at the article once more and take a guess... --Jwinius (talk) 19:00, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Monotypic?[edit]

This article claims that the genus Bothrochilus is monotypic - that is, it only has 1 species, Bothrochilus boa. Yet 3 other articles (Bothrochilus huonensis, Bothrochilus meridionalis and Bothrochilus montanus) claim to be other species in this genus. Which is correct? עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 20:16, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Well, this paper, a review of the systematics and taxonomy of Pythonidae, puts the other three species in Leiopython. The Leiopython article lists all three in that genus, but actually they are redirects to Bothrochilus species, which is inconsistent.
As the paper isn't freely accessible, I've listed below all the species it puts in the two genera:
  • Bothrochilus boa – Ringed Python
  • Leiopython albertisii – Northern Whitelip Python
  • Leiopython biakensis – Biak Whitelip Python
  • Leiopython fredparkeri – Karimui Basin Whitelip Python
  • Leiopython huonensis – Huon Peninsula Whitelip Python
  • Leiopython meridionalis – Southern Whitelip Python
  • Leiopython montanus – Wau Whitelip Python
However, they note that there are arguments to merge the two genera (in which case Bothrochilus disappears) but say "We argue that it is conservative to continue recognition of Leiopython". I'm inclined to stick to the names in this paper for now, which requires some moves, but I'm no expert on snakes!
