Exceptional role[edit]

According to the Mathematical Geneology Project, Frank Morely wrote no dissertation and his advisor is unknown. He had no advanced degree beyond the B.A. of Cambridge. Yet he produced 50 Ph.D. students, who in turn have 372 known descendants. This story evidently reflects something of the demand for his services at the time, and of his capacity to fill that expectation. According to the R.C. Archibald reference posted today, Morley took leave from Haverford College 1897-8, and returned to Cambridge for a D.Sc. The Semicentennial History carries the weight of authority of an official American Mathematical Society publication.Rgdboer (talk) 21:00, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
