Another Inuit name, [SYAR-nuck], perhaps better Anglicized as [see-YAR-nuck].

follow up[edit]

Heard back from Michael Kusugak, who proposed the name. NASA had given the pronunciation as "syar-NAK" in a press release, with the accent messed up (which happens surprisingly often). Michael said,

"You are right about the accents. Kiviuq is pronounced Ki' vi uq (kee' vee oq, the q is gutteral, pronounced in the back of the tongue). Paw' lee ahq, See' ar nahq and Ee' ye rahq."

Actually, the Inuit 'r' is also "gutteral" (uvular), rather like the French 'r'. kwami 06:05, 14 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Note: When J.J. Kavelaars asked me to suggest names for four moons around Saturn, I consulted R.G. Williamson and Karla Jessen Williamson. Karla Jessen Williamson is of Greenlandic Inuit origin. We considered the name Sedna for one of the moons but could not reconcile the name because it does not make sense in the Inuktitut language, either in Greenlandic Inuktitut or Canadian Arctic Inuktitut. The closest we could come to was sanna (down there) or siarnaq which means grey as in grey haired dog. Considering Nuliajuk (or Sedna as she is variously called by non-Inuit) is old and grey, we decided on Siarnaq. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kusugak (talk • contribs) 18:53, 19 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know, "Sedna" comes from/"is the same as" "sanna", though I'm not sure of the exact relationship. (Dialect spelling? Older orthographic conventions?) -- pne (talk) 11:48, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of broken links[edit]

When I looked up the links in the former version both were broken. However now is a bit on the short side regarding sources. Which is even worse as the article about Saturnian satellites also is not so reliable concerning the inclinations of the Unuit group.
