Flat headgear[edit]

seems entirely wrong, as shown by the numerous counterexamples and counterimages up and down the page. The American baseball cap is very obviously not the only form. On the other hand, it does seem to be something slightly different than 'synonym for hat'. Seems like the main commonality (apart from the pointed exceptions) is the idea that the hat is closefitting and largely replicates the shape of the head.

The Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1st ed., article on "cap" is hilarious, btw, dating the introduction of caps "to these parts of the world" precisely to the entry of Charles VII to Rouen in 1449, after which it was affected by the royalty, upper clergy, nobility, and university students. Less hilariously, they note (a) that the cap was a mark of graduates' freedom from being beaten by their masters and upperclassmen, after the similar headwear worn by Roman freedmen during manumission and the Saturnalia and (b) that yellow/orange caps were used to mark Jews for easy identification in early modern France and Italy. — LlywelynII 12:09, 4 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
