Xmas Gift[edit]

Errors on Main Page[edit]

Rush Limbaugh is in fact NOT the only show not produced locally on KMOX. "Jay Severin Has Issues" is primary among them, although the KMOX Radio Theatre also includes content produced elsewhere. Jay Severin's program is no longer on KMOX since his syndication deal ended in failure in the fall of 2006. Dbm

KMOX -- the Christmas thing.[edit]

Even though the story is that the X in KMOX stands for Christmas, since they started broadcasting on Christmas day, I have always been suspicious that it really stands for "Transmission", as in Xmit. If the station wanted KVSL, but the Federal Radio Commission "assigned" KMOX, it sounds like the station didn't get to tell the FRC what it wanted.

A more plausible explanation is that the FRC assigned KMOX to mean K (west of the Misssissippi), MO - Missouri, and X, as in Missouri Transmission. This would make some sense since it would be the biggest transmitter in the state. I suspect that when the station owners realized their first transimission day would come around Christmas time, they decided to start exactly on Christmas, and declare the X to mean Xmas, to start a nice legend.

But I don't know for sure. I need a credible source to confirm.

As the KMOX historian, I can tell you the story as told in the Wikipedia entry is correct and complete. No other details, such as the ones you brought up, have ever turned up.

As Bill Clinton might say, it depends on your definition of "official." I am not paid, but if you contact the station switchboard or send an email of inquiry, you will be referred to me. If I may jump in here as someone who works at KMOX. Frank worked at KMOX a number of years ago for a while. One of the projects he is currently involved with is a website that documents the history of St. Louis Radio (http://www.stlradio.com/). Moradio 1 is correct that there is no "official" historian at KMOX. It should be noted that Frank is often asked historical events not only at KMOX but other stations in St. Louis as well.
