I added the section headings and the "List of Titles" for clarification. When the royal family renounced their German name and adopted "English" names it gets rather confusing. There was no reference for any of these, but I did use current Wikipedia pages for examples on formatting, etc. ESQ24
"When the 2nd Marquess of Cambridge died in 1981, his peerages became extinct." I wonder why his titles were not allowed to pass to his daughter? When Alexander Duff, 1st Duke of Fife died in 1912, his title passed to his daughter, Princess Alexandra, Duchess of Fife. I wonder why other peerages don't do that. It all depends on the way the peerage was defined to be inherited by the Letters Patent that created the peerage. Some of them, like the Dukedom of Fife (which was actually originally to pass to heirs male, but was re-created to pass to heirs male and then to daughters and their heirs male) do have remainders for female children, others do not. The Earldom Mountbatten of Burma can pass in the female line, but most are restricted to the heirs male of the former dukes/earls/etc. Prsgoddess187 01:36, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
