Sanyaku actually comprises only of Komusubi and Sekiwake. The meaning as written to be 'three ranks' might be translated as well as 'third rank', despite the character for 'ban' in Japanese, is missing.

Sanyaku ranks

Sanyaku historically is Ozeki, Sekiwake and Komusubi, with the rank of Yokozuna refering to a "super-Ozeki", for want of a better description, who is licenced as a result to perform a special ring entry ceremony. This has been the case in all text books I have read on the topic. Furthermore, the term Sanyaku has been around longer than Yokozuna to my knowledge and so the third rank on that basis would only be Komusubi, which would not make sense. However Sanyaku can be used to refer in certain instances to only Sekiwake and Komusubi. Records for the most number of tournaments and consecutive tournaments in "sanyaku" are often quoted in these terms, even though strictly speaking the records refer only to the two junior sanyaku ranks.
