etymology[edit]

Where does the word "Nabi" come from? I don't know any such word in French; the closest word I know to "Nabi" is the Hebrew and Arabic word for "prophet". -phma

Janson claims that the name is from the Hebrew Nabi, and considering the fascination of the artistic movement in question with Biblical imagery, such as Salome, it would make sense to be Biblically inspired. Where is the source that they were named after the Arabic word? What is the connection to Arabic? Tiberian Hebrew and Modern Hebrew both pronounce the word as Navi. However, when Romanized a "b" is used (much as the second letter of modern Greek is transliterated "beta" and not "vita"). I am changing it to Hebrew.

Egasterium is supposed to be ergasterium....I think. Please change it back if it is the former. (Unsigned post).

Verkade himself talks about 'der Kreis der Nabis oder besser "Nebiim", wie der Plural dieses Wortes eigentlich heisst' - that is, 'the circle of the Nabis, or rather "Nebiim", as the plural of this word should properly be'. (Willibrord (Jan) Verkade, Die Unruhe zu Gott (Herder, Freiburg im Breisgau 1930 Edition), p. 67.) Does that help? I have read somewhere that it means The Prophet(s). Les Nabis → Nabis (art) – Per WP:COMMONNAME. See recent discussion at Talk:Nabis of Sparta. "Les Nabis" is a French-language rendering which is not predominantly used by English-language reliable sources. Move to Nabis (also support as proposed). The movement got 65% of pageviews even when competing with another topic at the base title. Long-term significance is evidenced by Google Books and WorldCat exclusively returning results for the group, and JSTOR has the art meaning as the majority of hits. Ebscohost and Scholar are mixed between many (some non-notable) meanings, though Scholar does give the group first in a search of nabis -author:nabi. Either Nabis (art) or The Nabis is fine as a move target. We should not move to just Nabis because we don't know that it's the primary topic (65% of page views does not actually mean the average English reader associates this term with this topic so strongly that there's a risk of astonishing anyone without a redirect). We discussed this already recently, there's no rush to do this (once we have the clickstreams from the list, which means a couple of months to get a few monthly samples, it will be possible to analyze that better). --Joy (talk) 20:15, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
