Digg

Hello there. I'm having some problems relating to the digg page which I understand you protected as a redirect to excavation. Excavation is currently receiving a fair degree of vandalism mostly relating to adding digg.com related material or just boobie references. I am not aware of all the issues reagrding the digg vfd but would grateful if you would consider changing the digg redirect page as it has just shifted the problem elsewhere. Actually, I'm still in the middle of the "next time." I don't have cable modem at home yet, so I'm still only logging in occasionally. I just can't stay away, even though it costs like crazy to log on at Kinkos (where I am right now). I'm paying twenty cents a minute ($12/hr) just so I can do some wiki-maintenance. That's right folks, here at Wikipedia the editors aren't paid; they pay to edit. :-) I'll only be able to edit occasionally until I'm hooked up and can mainline my Wiki-fix at high speed. Welcome back. I wonder just how much work time goes into editing Wikipedia from all of us. I was startled by my boss asking me a couple of months ago "I presume that you're gadfium". It wasn't hard for him to piece together - he looked at the major contributor to the article on our software, then looked at my user page. I was a little concerned after that he might look at my user contributions and see how many were made during office hours (although the bulk of my time spent here is from home, and I have to do something at work while waiting for the compiler or test case to run, right?). Anyway, I retire in two days time, so it will no longer be an issue for me.-gadfium 20:16, 29 August 2005 (UTC)

Probably a bad time to ask since I don't know if you'll get this anytime soon - being on vacation and all, but I noticed on a talk page for Electronic voice phenomena you mentioned something about page counters saying the page had like 190,000 hits or something... how do find the number of hits a page has, or is that an admin thing? I'm having a look at some of the edits of User:Tropicaldawn, who is being a bit disgruntled because of deletions of articles they created. I notice that you deleted this article. Can I suggest that you may have been a little overzealous in this deletion? While it's not a very good article, and rather short, it has the potential to become more. It contains a claim to notability, and there is certainly more that could be said about the person. The article is realy borderline on the 'advertising' criterion. I'm going to restore the article. Hi, I saw your question about a deleted article on some page on my watchlist. I'm just reminding you that as a non-admin you can no longer see how many deleted edits a certain article has. Before I knew it I had decided it didn't matter how busy RL was; I was going to make time for Wikipedia. You're right about removing the inactive notice. I've been thinking about that, myself, but putting it off because of the time tradeoff. I would prefer a more aesthetically pleasing page than what I had before. Putting one together means taking time away from reverting vandalism. You're right, though. It's time. I guess I'll just shamelessly steal ideas from some of the user pages I've seen lately. Ah, I see. When you want to do something like that, it might be best to copy/paste into a word processor to work with it first. Another option is to use the Show preview button (just to the right of Save page) -- that will let you see what the page would look like if you saved it right now. You can continue to work on the page, and get it just the way you want it to look, by using the preview. Once you have it ready, then click Save page and it will be saved and your changes will be visible. I hate to have to bring this up, but the article you created doesn't seem to be about a notable person and will likely be deleted. Wikipedia articles about people are supposed to be about people who are already noteworthy. Someone who is "relatively unknown" is non-notable. Re: 3RR grey area

Thanks for your reply. I hope you don't mind me responding here.

The specific case that led me to ask was one where someone who was edit-warring (and subsequently blocked) tried to make a point by listing my 3 reversions of their editing, along with two unrelated reversions of disruptive (albeit not clear-cut vandals) IPs (from the opposite POV as his, no less) in an attempt to get me blocked for 3RR (I got off on a technicality). With the amount of disruptive, although non-vandal IPs out there, especially on high-traffic articles, it seems that this type of usage could be taken advantage in similar circumstances, unless there is a facet of policy with which I'm not familiar that prevents this. Let me know what you think, Tewfik^Talk 03:53, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

If you try to be a one-person army then the 3RR can be taken advantage of to back you into a corner. You're right about that. The key is that there are literally thousands of others editing Wikipedia at any time, and there are hundreds of admins to call upon. All you have to do is give a shout and enough others will put their eyes on the article that you won't have to worry. Just make sure you're in the right, because the third-party people you call in are going to be scrutinizing your edits as well. And give it some time. The response won't be immediate, but it is okay if disruptive edits remain visible for a little while. What matters is the long-term results, so be patient (i.e. edit a different article) while waiting for backup. The good thing about high traffic articles is that they are high traffic. Wikipedia works based on the unwritten assumption that there are more people making good-faith edits than the opposite. Disruptive edits seem annoying if you're the only one fighting them, but that's the beauty of the system -- you don't have to be the only one fighting them. There are several places to call attention to others about disruptive editors. If the article you're watching isn't high traffic, then call in others. If it is, don't worry. Reggae-Grind

i was inquiring as to why my Reggae-Grind page has been looked at to be deleted. the genre is not a joke or anything, it's a serious genre by serious musicians who are creating new styles of music.

It all boils down to notability. A small "movement" by several not-yet-notable bands doesn't meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability, and therefore isn't noteworthy enough for an encyclopedia article. Such an article would effectively fill the role of advertising. Once Reggae-Grind becomes a significant scene, or a well-known band self identifies as belonging to the genre, then an article would be appropriate. Awesome userpage!! I hardly edit and create articles anymore (due to NPOV violations, edit wars, copyright issues, and lack of time) which is why I've made it a point to work as much as I have on my Wikidiaries, and also to put try to get them seen in Wikipedia:Stub Makers. (So others may use them as a resource, etc). (I considered putting them on Wikipedia:WikiProject Red Link Recovery as well). Thank you for your compliment of my userpage. I have to admit, though, that I just stole concepts from other user pages and pieced together what I wanted. If you "edit this page" on my userpage, you'll see a comment at the top that credits the others. As for your Wikidiaries -- I like the idea. It allows you to neatly organize information you want accessible without cluttering your watchlist or user page. I actually came across them while patrolling Anon RC, when an anon made an edit to the subpage (which I see you've had deleted) that I mentioned on your talk page. That, and your own contributions showed all of your subpages. That's how I usually run across most things -- not by the normal "link" route, but by lists of contributions. I see. There were 148 redlinks pointing to that page. That's why. I created a redirect at that page name to the policy page. It could very well get deleted as a cross-space redirect out of article space, but I think with that many pages pointing to it, it would be useful. We'll see. At least I understand why, now. Also the first legislative act to cite Wikipedia." There was already an overwhelming consensus to keep, but I chimed in anyway. I'm on RL vacation right now and only checking in every few days or so. Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors! What's New? September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves! Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The new Esperanza front page design has but put up - many thanks to all who worked on it! What is Going On

I keep getting new messages when I have only edited Wikipedia once about Mitch Hedberg, and now I am getting messages for all this stuff that I didn't do. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.163.100.137 (talk • contribs)

• Because of the way AOL works, you get assigned a different IP address each time you log in. When you logged onto AOL, you happened to be assigned an IP address that someone had earlier used to edit Wikipedia. The messages you're seeing were left for those other people. You can avoid the confusion by creating an account, which will let you choose a username that only you can use, so you don't get messages left for others who have used whatever random IP you're assigned when you connect to AOL. There are several benefits of creating an account. It is free and no personal information is required. Happy editing! SWAdair 03:40, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice on separate user accounts for our employees, until today this has been banned by company policy, however, your suggestion makes sense and would hopefully prevent a recurrence of the last two weeks problems. Our administration policies have now been relaxed in regards to Wikipedia Accounts.
