Should we have Flemish painters

Two questions for someone who knows their Netherlands better than me.

• Should the van Eycks be sorted under 'van' rather than 'E'
• For Renaissance painters (and others), is it OK to include Flemish painters under Dutch painters or should we have a separate Category:Flemish painters? -- Solipsist 17:54, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Two tentative answers:

• In my art history books (including Janson), they are sorted under E, so we may stick to that.
• Being Flemish myself, and considering Flanders' mostly separate history and different artistic developments (e.g. the Flemish Primitives), I'd prefer creating a separate category for them.

sort order

40 of these painters with a surname prefixed by the article "van" sort on the surname, not the "van".

8 of these painters, including "Vincent van Gogh", sort on the article "van" first, then the surname.

It should probably be consistent. for all categories that include someone with a Dutch name. Personally, I think we should sort on the article first. -- Geo Swan 02:16, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
