Featured Article
[edit]Welcome back! (Thank God) I've been runnig around like the proverbial headless chicken... :) I figured if SLC couldn't make, I would throw your article into the ring. Consider it a late Chrismukkah present. Well, no one says SLC can't be a featured article, we just have to work a bit harder on it... --[jon] 19:34, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- BTW, were you still interested in helping me form a wikiproject for Utah? I've been browsing other wikiprojects for ideas, but am a bit intimidated by the scope... any guidance would be welcome :) [jon] 19:49, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)
re: Suppression
[edit]Good evening. I was looking at the suppression code you put in Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse (censored). I'd like to use similar code on the Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Old page. We are now keeping all the discussion threads as a log on the individual day pages. I recently added some code to Template:vfd top and Template:vfd bottom that creates a box around the closed discussions so the next admin can more easily see that this discussionhas been processed and go to the next. The visual identifier is nice but if similar code could suppress the transclusion and hide the discussion from the Old page (though not on the day pages), that would be even better. Unfortunately, I don't know enough HTML to reverse-engineer your solution with the image suppression. Any suggestions? Thanks. Rossami (talk) 02:45, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Actually, my thought was to put the suppression tag (that's probably not the right word) in the same div command that I added to the vfd top template and which creates the box around the discussion. Vfd top is only added to the discussion thread when the discussion is closed. The command to hide the discussion would, I guess, be somewhere on the Old page.
- I have no idea if it can work that way. That's just how I'd envisioned it. Thanks again for your help. Rossami (talk)

Everyking arbitration
[edit]I've filed an arbitration request against Everyking. Please comment; brickbats for my foolhardiness are more than welcome. Johnleemk | Talk 07:55, 16 Jan 2005 (UTC)
I question why the clitoris page needs to be protected at all. Since the edit in question is (as a matter of pure mechanics) small and easily altered, it would not disrupt other edits, whereas protection prevents all edits. Therefore the protection measure is more damaging than the activity it is preventing. --13:18, 16 Jan 2005 (UTC)
The stuff is highly referenced - I've asked on said talk page for ideas on how to make it clearer that this is in fact all for real and nailed down in detail. Your help as a casual incredulous reader is needed! - David Gerard
Hey, you endorsed the RfC on Everyking, and as you know, it's gone to arbitration. Some of us feel that the proposed decision against Everyking is insufficient and too weak for a user who has abused Wikipedia so badly. I hope you can weigh in at Wikipedia talk:Requests for arbitration/Everyking/Proposed decision having read the proposed decision and discussion and share your opinion with us, whether it's that the decision is too strong, just right, or too weak. Just because you weren't involved as deeply as some of us shouldn't prevent you from sharing your opinion. Johnleemk | Talk 06:13, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)
LDS links
[edit]Do you happen to know why people are going around changing Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and then other people are changing that to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in several local-area articles? Also, if you want to hang out, I will call you Friday. :)--[jon] [talk] 12:42, 2 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Here seems as good a place as any to leave the comment, given my near-obsession with 'fixing' LDS links. Thanks for the kind comments; I've found the LDSM project people very good to work with. Raul wielding the bullyboy stick again
[edit]Luke, please note that Raul has threatened to block me again on my talk page. I will be removing the clitoris picture again tomorrow and I'd appreciate it if you could keep a close eye on the blocking log so that I can be unblocked. I do not believe I have any less right to edit the article just because I do not hold the majority view about including potentially offensive images on Wikipedia pages.
I'd like to see big, bad Raul block Jimbo! But of course he only bullies those who don't share his powers.Dr Zen 02:37, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Vandalism
[edit]Hi Luke — thanks for reverting the vandalism to my talk page. I couldn't work out how to undo it, as inter-wiki redirects don't appear to show you the link back to the page to allow editing. I assume I could have done it by taking the dif of Dogsex's edits, but I hadn't suspected him yet as I thought he had already been blocked. Anyway, thanks for your help! — Asbestos | Talk 12:18, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Warring on clitoris
[edit]Thanks for unblocking me.
Thanks also for the warning about edit-warring. I don't think I am but I take your point. I have asked Raul and Snowspinner to mediate. If they agree, I have agreed not to make the edit they dislike in the meantime.
I am not afraid of the dispute resolution process. I have edited entirely in good faith and within the policies of Wikipedia. I feel my views have been disrespected by other editors, including admins, simply because they hold the majority view, and I know that the arbcom tends to side with the majority, but I have not breached etiquette here, nor will I, and I won't give you cause to regret having faith in me as an editor. Dr Zen 02:55, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)
BTW, I didn't disregard your message. I hope you don't think I did. If there was a "dispute resolution process" I wouldn't be making the edit. However, the arbitrators are lining up to hang me, claiming mediation would not work! I guess they will be showing how "consensus" is reached by banning me from the page. That will probably be enough to frighten off anyone else who dissents, because, let's face it, if you can be banned for making good-faith edits once a day, you can be banned for just about anything if Raul wants it, and the POV that I am trying to represent will become one of those that Wikipedia does not include. Dr Zen 01:06, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Clitoris fork
[edit]That's a phrase you don't write every day! Did your idea for switching out the images completely die or does it still have a spark of life left in it? If it's alive, or even if it isn't, are you willing to join a discussion that actually has the purpose of reaching a compromise, rather than simply repeating positions over and over. I'm making some progress with Timbo and I reckon that the anti-imagists are convincable. The plan is, create the compromise and then create the consensus for it. If faced with a workable compromise, and some measure of support for it, I can't see how hardliners can't feel that they are on the outer. It's a great improvement on the only means of working on the article's being fruitless reverts. Dr Zen 05:50, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

"not all of the minority are trolls"
[edit]I'm really unhappy that you called me a troll. I'm trying to improve Wikipedia. You can clearly see that Tony Sidaway (and he's not alone) does not think that the picture is worth discussing if no one makes a fuss.
Well, I made a fuss. Is that trolling? No way. I'm not trying to waste anyone's time. I'm trying to achieve a real consensus. The only people wasting time here are those who are spending their days in witchhunting me for making a (minor, easily reversible -- one click for an admin) change a few times. No subterfuge. No abuse. No bad behaviour.
What Tony Sidaway forgets, and I'd hoped you wouldn't, is that "edit warriors" are nothing more, nothing less than people whose views we don't share. When we agree with their views, they are just "reverting vandals" or "fighting trolls". "Appeasing edit warriors" is exactly what NPOV is all about. Dr Zen 04:04, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)
re: VfD closings
[edit]Good evening. Thank you for closing so many of the recent VfD discussions. Can I ask for one minor change in the process that you seem to be using? You have, I think, been converting the section header on the deletion page back into a plain link. Would you please leave it as a header? It would make one of the archiving steps a little cleaner. It only crops up if we ever need to find the VfD discussion again but that did happen recently on the discussions about "A Heinlein Trio". Thanks. Rossami (talk) 00:20, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- No problem. It's really rare that it makes a difference (and might never make a difference if I'm the only one who searches for them in that particular way). Thanks again. Rossami (talk)

issues over school articles
[edit]In November 2003, there was a VfD debate over Sunset High School (Portland). The debate was archived under Talk:Sunset High School (Portland). What to do with the article is still being contested and has been recently re-nominated for VfD at Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Sunset High School (Portland).
I am writing to you because you have participated in such debates before. There still does not exist a wikipedia policy (as far as i can tell) over what to do in regards to articles about specific U.S. public school. My hope is that a real consensus can come out of the debate, and a real policy can take shape. Take part if you are so willing. Kingturtle 02:20, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Important VFD
[edit]Please see the VFD for commons:List of victims of the 1913 Great Lakes storm. This is of vital importance. This list and others like it are being pushed off of the entire Wikimedia project. It started at Wikipedia, where they were VFDd in favor of moving to Wikisource/Commons. Now they are being VFDd off Wikisource (they don't really belong there, since they are not original source texts), with people there saying they should be on WP/Commons, and it is also being VFDd on Commons, where people don't realize that Commons accepts texts (says so right on the Main Page). This will set a precedent for any user-created lists. -- BRIAN0918 22:41, 30 July 2005 (UTC)

I created the site some years back and being cheap, placed it on my ISP's (BellSouth.net) free pages. Then when I changed ISPs, I lost all control of the site. Couldn't add to or delete. However, for whatever reason, Bellsouth never took it down, and it has remained in its 2002 version for the past three years. - Tell your friends (esp. LDS friends, & esp. Wikipedian friends) about this WikiProject, and enocourage them to join (and be active).
Remember: your involvement in this WikiProject is just that - involvement! Please help us out.

Images
[edit]Okay, I know there's almost certainly a better place to ask this, but asking on a talk page or a Wikipedia page just doesn't usually cut it for me with specific Wikipedia policies. I figured, you're an administrator, you might know. Sometimes when I'm going through Wikipedia policies I'm trying to read through layers of bureacuracy. Anyway, I can't for the life of me figure this out, and I was just wondering if you could help me. What exactly are you supposed to do when you upload your own images? Do you just put the tag on the picture? Where do you upload it? And what copyright tag do you put on it? I honestly did not figure out any of these quesitons from 2 hours of searching through image policies. Wikipedia seems so much like a bureacuracy sometimes. Anyway, I hope you can help me, cause I'm seriously at a loss (I would ask JonMoore, but apparently he's on a temporary leave). bob rulz 06:31, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Image Tagging Image:Cool Hand Luke eating rice pilaf.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading Image:Cool Hand Luke eating rice pilaf.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL-self to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Shyam (T/C) 21:02, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Questions
[edit]Hello, I did some editing on the Kelo page and you suggested that I sign up. I'm not sure how to do this, but would like to because I think Wikipedia is such a great thing. I promise I won't keep coming to you to "report" things, but I'm having trouble at the Anna Nicole Smith page. Particularly the section of her litigation that has made it to the Supreme Court. I put in extensive time researching the case and reading the relevant decisions, and I put in what I thought was a good description of the complexity of the cases. I realize that my piece might have been POV from the standpoint that it did not have much info on the Texas probate decision, but I was trying to distinguish the two lines of cases, which are completely separate (and which the article does not recognize). I now strongly feel (as noted in my talk comments) that somebody involved in the litigation is attempting the hi-jack the section. Just thought I'd point it out and ask what suggestions you may have. On one hand, I don't really care and feel like saying "fine, let it stand as is." But on the other hand, I feel like it's a figh for the future of Wikipedia (and, oddly, that is an important battle to me). thanks.129.210.218.152 06:29, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
- Hello. Making a wikipedia account is easy; you don't even need to have an email address. Just click on "sign in" and click to create an account. Just make a unique user id and type your password in twice.
- I must admit that I'm not an expert on these topics (I happen to be a 1L law student), but controversial topics are often littered with popular distortions, and Kelo is certainly an example of this problem. Your work seems good to me, I removed it mostly out of concern it violates the policy Wikipedia:No original research.
- Article inaccuracies are particularly distressing because Wikipedia articles are sometimes cited in briefs! Finals are coming up for me, but I promise to look into Anna Nicole Smith sometime soon. It wouldn't surprise me at all. Cool Hand Luke 21:18, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
