Shin-Ra Electric Power Company is "神羅カンパニー" in Japanese. An ancient Korean kingdom name is "新羅", not "神羅". 222.147.253.248 14:30, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, descriing Shinra as ruthless is a little odd, after all this is the opinion we get only from anti-shinra factions. Though I suppose Rufus did show it to be a little ruthless...

Etymology and such[edit]

"Trivia" regarding the name "Shinra" was a bit of a mess, so I attempted to clean it up somewhat... I'm not sure how relevant these items are:

"Shin-Ra" is written in Chinese Hanzi (or 'kanjii') And refer's as "Shen Luo." "Shen" means god/ spirit in Chinese. "Luo" has several meanings, for instance: "a net to catch birds in"; "to display"; "a sieve"; or "gauze" (a type of silk).
"Shinra" is also the on-reading of "新羅". This word is usually read shiragi and is the Japanese name of Silla, an ancient Korean kingdom.
Shinra comes from Egyptian mythology. A monster called Shinra is described as a huge, dark vampire.

Shin-Ra has also been known to mean "God's Network"

Would this replacement be appropriate?

"Shin-Ra" is written with the Japanese kanji 神羅. This does not appear to be an actual Japanese surname, although its on-reading is the same as many others. The individual kanji mean "god"/"divine" and "Rome"/"silk". Exactly why this name was chosen and what it might imply are matters of some discussion among fans.
The name is Romanized as "Shin-Ra" in official Japanese materials. The reasons for this (as opposed to the straightforward "Shinra") may be simply for stylistic reasons.

When I first saw the Chinese characters for Shinra, the words "God trap" or "God is trapped" immediately registered on my mind. Just as a net is used to capture fish, this corporation is used to capture the gods. I think this interpretation is very important. Allentchang 17:04, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

But I'm pretty sure that the second part (the Luo) is pretty much just a regular surname (at least in Chinese anyways).

Popular culture[edit]

It's a megacorp, so that term can cover any colloquial "shinra" definitions. Incidentally, even ig shinra is a popular or used term outside of the Final Fantasy VII fandom, it would still be synonymous and should be noticed as such -- assuming it were true, that is. Junon Cannon/Sister Ray[edit]

The Shin-Ra naval base over the fishing town of Junon was equipped with an enormous cannon called the "Sister Ray"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the cannon was never called the Sister Ray whilst it was located in Junon. It was only until it was transported to Midgar that Scarlet decided to rename it "Sister Ray". Furthermore, I think the game only called it the Mako Cannon prior to its renaming, but I'm guessing there.

And whilst I'm at it, I guess, should this section mention that the cannon was powered by the Huge Materia whilst in Junon? Resakov 22:18, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, When Tifa runs down the cannon's barrel, it cleary says Sister Ray. I've always figured Scarlet's thing was a mistranslation, and that she was really reminding him it was called Sister Ray, rather than naming it right then. Made2Fade 09:08, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Shinra vs. Shin-Ra[edit]

Shouldn't this be moved to Shinra? Sure, all the full-motion videos use the term "Shin-Ra", but it's never referred to as "Shin-Ra" by any of the characters in the official English localizations; it's always "Shinra". Even in the recent English release of Advent Children, it was spelled "Shinra" on the subtitles. So shouldn't the article be moved to Shinra? Geg 16:48, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Shin-Ra as a good company[edit]

Well, it have sort of an shopping in it's three first floors. =) Lol... Anyway, it probably employs all up Midgar in it 58 first floors... Has it's Shin-Ra Motor Mobiles making nice cars (and motorcylces!) for all up Midgar... Oh, and don't forget that they provide eletricity! Have you checked how poor are the peoples from the cities without Reactor? Dunno if this is said in the article, (I'll read it tomorrow, maybe erase this, g2g). DeepGround[edit]

I think given the revelations in Dirge of Cerberus, a mention or section devoted to ShinRa's "Dark Secret" Deepground needs to be added. It's history in the Compilation of FFVII is definately worth noting as it was a major player in DoC's plot and a major revelation in terms of ShinRa history.

If no one can add one in a reasonable period of time, like a week, I'll take it upon myself to add one and we can work from there. But it definately needs to be added to the ShinRa section.198.213.57.8 18:14, 13 October 2006 (UTC)Makoeyes987[reply]

Moving to Shinra[edit]

I think the article should be at Shinra because:

All places where it is rendered "Shin-Ra" are in the Japanese version and we should use official English version names. In fact, this spelling only occurs in Shinra's Japanese version logo since the Japanese language doesn't have capital letters.
It is rendered "Shinra" in all official English localizations, including the original, Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, etc.
It is named after the president's family which does not have a dash in it.
