Is this the same person as Fulke Greville, 1st Baron Brooke? Points in favor: the same dates! Points against: if as 5th Baron W de B he was succeeded by his sister (having no heirs), then wouldn't the newly-created title Baron Brooke have died out with him? Yes, they are the same person. During his lifetime, however, he was not Baron Willoughby de Broke; it's a title that is "given" him retrospectively by current interpretation of peerage law. The Brooke barony was created with a special remainder "failing the heirs male of his body", to Robert Greville and William Greville, sons of Fulke Greville, who was only son and heir of Robert Greville, brother of Sir Fulke Greville, the father of the first Baron Brooke. In the event, the 1st Baron died sine prole, but was succeeded under the special remainder by his cousin, whom he had also adopted. The Willoughby de Broke barony, with no special remainder, was (later) deemed to have been inherited by the heir general of the original grantee, Fulke's sister Margaret.
