Noita ≠ wise ?

The first chapter has some very odd wordings and some bits I can't quite decipher. Also, "noita" in modern finnish at least means quite literally "witch". Wise one would be "tietäjä" ("one who knows"). I can't really tell what that or some bits are describing, though, so I didn't change anything apart from "raindeer" :) Consulting some Sami or other sources might shed light on the subject enough to correct or clarify the article. --blades 00:17, May 17, 2004 (UTC)

Yeah, I noticed that noita nowadays means "witch" (which I originally wroted, bute changed later to "wise"). I camed across this meaning in an very old encyklopediae from the late 1800s. If you manage Finnish, can you please check it against an etymology dictionary? Shamanism has been seen as a girlish thing, and assumed the modern meaning "witch" has something to do with that; but I'm not sure. It need to either to be related to Finnish noita; instead, noita might be related to naid.// Rogper 00:28, 17 May 2004 (UTC)
