I'm not sure about that, I've seen it done a bunch of different ways. If you reply on my talk page then I'm going to be notified I have a message the next time I log in. But then the flow of the conversation is broken across two pages. Replying on the same makes the flow of the conversation readily understood to other users, but it might take longer between replies. sorting "other fields"

I want to sort other fields for the number articles, but i can't remember where the sorting criteria is on the wikiproject numbers page or if its somewhere else (I need to know it because their will inevitably be disagreements about what should come before what). Its something along the lines of "the most universal and eternal first, the most local and ephemeral last" I can't remember where i read that. Do you know where that's at? There's something about that on the project page, section 3.1, Outline of Template (and you quoted it with surprising accuracy for not remembering where it is). But overall, my impression is that we've devoted much less attention to the order of these properties than the order of the mathematical properties; and anyway, it's not always clear which of two properties is the more universal and eternal.

That said, I'd like to help with this sorting as well. User:Anton Mravcek has alrady declared his intention to undertake the sorting, but he appears to be sorting by general topic as opposed to by ephemerality. 4pq1injbok 01:49, 3 September 2005 (UTC)

Hare

I saw that you had written well informed things on the talk page for the Slave language, in particular the Hare dialect. I have become interested in the Hare dialect of Slave and have found the easy to find bibliographic things. I am however interested in being in touch with a linguist or linguists actively doing research on Hare or other Slave dialects and would really like to be in contact with speakers of Hare. Sorry to disappoint, but I'm not really in a good position to come up with anyone. My own interest in linguistics is decidedly avocational, and I don't really know much about Slave. (If I remember right, when I was editing the Slave page, I'd just come across Crippen's materials on Tlingit, which in one of his survey sections cited someone identifying these Hare consonants more plausibly-sounding than the statement Wikipedia had at the time.) The closest I'd have to a personal contact is a professor at the University of Calgary that I had in undergrad who'd worked on Athabaskan phonology, Darin Howe, but it'd probably be just as out-of-the-blue for me to write him as for you to, at this juncture... 4pq1injbok (talk) 22:26, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Vietnamese (Alphabet and other pages)

Hi, noticed some of the changes you made to the consonant section that I revised. I appreciate a lot of the rewording, and some of the changes you made helped bring it in line with other Vietnamese pages. That being said, I don't necessarily agree with the assessment of ⟨kh⟩ being realized as [kʰ] in the South, and it doesn't seem to be in line with other articles either. I've never heard of this myself or in texts, could you provide any sources for this? Hopefully we can work together to improve the quality of these pages over time. I hadn't checked the primary sources there. For that change I was also going by Vietnamese phonology as it existed at the time, but I see that you've changed that as well (and I don't know what other articles are relevant). You should probably ask whoever put [kʰ] in there in the first instance — ah, here it is, [1].

My first attempt to Google a source up yields [2] which chooses /x/ as the phoneme symbol, seemingly out of tidiness of analysis (it needed a fortis velar continuant to fill out the table), but notes that it has "an allophone with stop onset" (p 458, fn 10). 4pq1injbok (talk) 06:15, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

Awesome, thank you. I would presume that in the 55 years since its publishing the allophone may have disappeared. I see no reason to keep [kʰ] listed anywhere, since the accepted phoneme would be /x/ and I don't think the goal is necessarily precise phones but rather the core phonemes. Do you agree? Well, you may be correct, and I'm not one to wave the rulebook in people's faces, but as you know they like reliable sources around here, not just personal experience. So it'd seem best if you found one: the one I turned up says there is (was) this [kʰ] allophone. But if you just wanna be bold, I won't stop you.

I'll see what I can find. There aren't many sources on Southern dialect, but I also think that there existing "an allophone with stop onset" is very different from "the phoneme consists of a stop onset".
