'Wiki' in Chinese[edit]

How do you refer to Wikipedia in Chinese now? What is wiki in Chinese? Can you splice that onto 全书? Fuzheado 07:33, 26 Sep 2003 (UTC)

What do you mean 'no Chinese text for "Wikipedia"? -- Perhaps the reason for the hesitation is that using hanzi for phonetic substitution is a misuse of it? Why not use ideographic forms instead of trying to make something phonetic out of non-related hanzi? Even zhuyin and pinyin would be preferable to that, dont you think? So something distinct like 速全周宙書? -戴眩sv 09:04, 26 Sep 2003 (UTC)

It's currently under discussion at zh:Wikipedia:Wikipedia的中文名. The current consensus is 维基 (Wéijī), one of the closest transcriptions to Wiki that literally means "Maintaining the Foundation".

For the "Encyclopedia" part, most support 全书 (quanshu). Some, on the other hand, support the extra-full 大百科全书 (Dà Baikequanshu, "Grand Encyclopedia").

Pinyin is not preferrable, because it is not common to use latin letters to name something in Chinese. They only help people to pronounce a character, and are not part of the standard Chinese language.

We acutally came out with this name first, and then check the dictionary to see if it is appropriate. 维基 literally means "Maintaining the Foundation", but 维 can be explained as both "web"(as a noun) or "to link something". And 基 can be explained as "foundation stone"(基石). So basically the name means "to link the foundation stones(of knowledge)" or "a web of knowledge(foundation stones). The beauty(or cumbersome?) of Chinese is that there are so many different meanings for one character! --Formulax 08:52, 30 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Picture dispute[edit]

There's a bit of dispute over the September 11 pic (WTC1.JPG) that you uploaded at the Chinese Wikipedia. I put the Chinese pic onto the English version (renamed to 2wtccrash.jpg on EN) earlier in Dec. 2003. Mav suspected that it was a violation of copyright policy, delinked it, and asked me where I got it from. I told him on the talk page that it was from the Chinese Wikipedia. Anthere asked me what the desc. means on the Chinese page. I've decided to ask you what it meant since you uploaded the pic to the ZH server.

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Copyright in China[edit]

That's true for non-photographs. But for photographs, the term is different. I quote from [1]:

III. Term of Protection

There is no time limitation on moral rights protection. Generally, the term of protection of publication rights and other copyrights is the life of the author plus fifty years. In the following instances, the term of copyright is fifty years:

When the author of the work is a corporation or other entity;
When the work is a photographic work, cinematographic, television and audio-visual work;
When the radio or television program was broadcasted.

East Turkistan Islamic Movement and Al Qaeda[edit]

You asserted that several ETIM members acknowledged being trained by Al Qaeda. I asked about that, because I have read the transcripts of the Uighurs in Guantanamo.
