I noted that you are one of the listed members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Cat breeds. That project has seemed to go dormant lately, although my recent joining has reactivated it. I was wondering if you would think it might be a good idea to merge the two projects together. I acknowledge that the scope of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Cats is a lot broader than that of the cat breeds project, but it does at least seem to have gotten a fair amount of new members lately. Also, given its breadth, it could easily take on the duties of the Cat breeds project now that it has become dormant. I would be very interested in hearing from you on either project page whether you think the two projects should merge or not. Thank you for your attention. ok with me.Cats rule 15:12, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Here is a copy of the first newsletter of the Cats WikiProject, mentioning the proposed merger. I'm sending it out to all of the members of the Cat Breeds Project so that they can know a little about the group with which there is an existing merger proposal. We would welcome any and all comments about the project, and the newsletter, from members of both groups. Right now, I'm waiting on a couple of more responses from the Cat breeds members before we actually create a new subproject on breeds. Anyway, thank you for your attention. breed history[edit]

Hi,

Glad you're working on these pages. I saw that you removed the Baroness / intro to the US history of the Oriental Shorthair. Some of that was already there before I worked on the pages, and some I edited. I thought it was interesting, and personally like having individual names attached to histories rather than simply organizational actions. I'm not returning the text at this point, but thought I'd raise it with you to get the reason you deleted that content. --LQ 13:53, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I started off this article from the perspective of the CFA and using the information that this registry provides. If you read the CFA article on the Havana Brown, you will understand the persepective. I started working on this from the perspective of CFA, since that is the registry i use for my osh breeing program. i am finding their infomation to be sketchy where the history is concerned.

i think this is largely because in some countries, havana brown is a color of osh. in other countries, it is a seperately recognized breed. it is not disputed that the history of the Baroness is the history of the Havana Brown breed as recognized by CFA. It is disputed that this is the history of the oriental shorthair, since the oriental shorthair program was began for all self colored cats, not just the brown.

As I am learning more from experts, the Oriental Shorthair or Self Colored Siamese is not a created breed. It was imported from Siam with the Siamese. Given that the gene that restricts colors to the points is recessive, it makes sense that most of these cats were not point restricted. these cats were the solid ferals of siam and they are not a man made breed.

the osh was shown in england in the 1890's. the fancy at that time was more interested in color pattern than pedigree. during ww2, pedigree cats were bred with anything to keep the genetics. a lot of the breeds were bred together to preserve genetics. post ww2, everything had to be sorted out again. this is where the history of the breed is disputed.

A friend sent me the paper written by the breeding experiments done that eventually produced the havana brown. i don't have it with me. i would love to put it on the wikipedia, but i don't quite grasp the copyright issues with doing that. i would love to share it with you if you are interested, but i only have page one. people are digging into their scrapbooks to help update this article.

not to worry, i have some very experienced oriental breeders helping with the page. some of these people were involved in the original creation of the breed and getting the breed accepted into cfa. at any rate, this is going to take a while to unravel. if you would like to particpate in the discuttion, there is a yahoo group Oriental_Fanciers. The discussion is going on there, amongst other places.

this is going to be a bit like making sausage. the process is going to be ugly, but the end result is going to be wonderful.Cats rule 16:44, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd love to see the article; if you have it online you can send me the URL. Or, you could email it to me at lqonline at lquilter.net . I'm a copyright attorney & feel pretty comfortable saying that this limited use would be clearly fair use, since we're working on a research piece, and are not republishing for profit etc. More info about copyright & fair use at http://fairusenetwork.org/ which is a site I work on. ... As for the breed history, after I read the article maybe we can think of ways to talk about the breed history. Its natural origins & then its pick-up & refinement by cat asociations, perhaps, as separate topics. --LQ 17:31, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
the article is by Hargreaves and titled something like "a breeding experiment". what i have is a digital scan of the first page. ont of the guys helping out with the history actually had this article in a scrapbook. other such stuff is being collected and discussed. eventually i need to carry myself to the library and search for the articles. some of them have some pretty heavy duty genetics stuff, which i find to be utterly fascinating. these women collected empirical information and formed theories that are being proven with today's dna research on cat coat/color.

what is your interest in oriental shorthairs? do/did you breed them? do you own them? do you show them?Cats rule 18:45, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mostly, I'm just an aleurophile. My partner & I have 5 cats, including, right now, 3 OSHs (2 are sealpoints, one is a tabby). Her parents were in the cat-breeding & catshow community so I got a little bit interested in that history; as I said, what interests me in the history is the individuals & personalities, more than the associations. I should acknowledge that her parents are the Marksteins in the original article, and their stories of the personalities & politics in the cat world got me interested initially in that background. Probably, what I would love to see sometime would be an article that delved into the history of the organizations and the politics and personalities of them.
I am very interested in the genetics, in part because my partner is a geneticist. But the part that is fascinating to me is the "amateur science" you mention: That people in the cat world just gathered a lot of data and made hypotheses. That's another aspect that I think would be worthy of its own article. --LQ 19:47, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Please write an article on the Marksteins, et. all. Seems you have a good perspective. Then we can merge it in when the "experts" finish discussing the topic. BTW, page one of the Hargreaves article is listed in the references. If you can find the entire article, i would love it. And other similar articles. You should join the Oriental Fanciers yahoo group. Seems you could add a lot to the current discussion.

Moves of cat articles[edit]

Hello, I moved back 4 cat articles from your unilateral and weird titling. If you think that current titles do not fit to contents, would you first open a discussion on its talk or on WikiProject Cat first? Thank.--Caspian blue 06:32, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:Oriental Shorthair cat Brandi.jpg[edit]

You have included this file to en.wikipedia.org. Obviously another user has transferred it to Wikimedia Commons. What i miss is a description of the cat itself: name (preferrably pedigree name), DoB, colour, possibly name of parents and so on. It would be of great help to get these information.
