Plural of virus[edit]

Hi. I see you reverted the last edit by Fubar Obfusco to the Computer virus article. I also disagreed with his edit and have dropped a note about it on his talkpage. I (and others) have changed a few things on the plural of virus page since your last comments on its talkpage. Since you are knowledgeable about the topic, I'd like to ask you if you want to have a look at the new version, if you feel like it, and leave a comment (or improve it) if something is inaccurate or if there are any pov comments left in the article. Gah! gahbage![edit]

I just deleted ALL of the refs for this article. None were from reputable sources. Virtually all of the references were links to web sites created by Sethi himself, or were links to web sites that sell his work - and they all used the same promotional "psuedo-biography" piece which cannot be considered reputable, credible or verifiable. Those Bio-pieces are typically written by the person the bio is about or by a Public relations agent. They are not ever credible.

Oh, yeah - the last link was to a jewelry trade journal which had a puff piece in it. The only factual statement made in the puff piece was that Sethi's jewelery line now has little animals in it.

Note - I did some research, the artists appears to not be notable.

I googled up 1600 hits on this artist. I carefully scanned the first 400..... (and I will never do that again! ;-) )

I found no actual articles about the artist from from any reputable source . Every hit I found was either a listing for a gallery showing, or a copy of the same marketing text re-published, or re-worded and then re-published, in a fashion trends publication. ( Truly ephemeral ephemerality.... )

Fashion trends and designers come and go so fast that for any fashion designer to be considered notable they either have to have lasted a long time already, or so completely upset the apple cart of the fashion world that they are getting covered in the mainstream media, like Lady Gaga. (I'm a 53 year old suburban soccer Dad, [yeah, I coach] , and even I know who Lady Gaga is. That's Notability!  :-) ) (yes, I know Lady Gaga is a music artist not a fashion designer. Well, maybe she IS a fashion designer ... She sure as heck is visual... anyway.... )

Anyone can submit an article and there is no editorial oversight. The article is attributed to someone named Daniel with no last name Daniel appears to have written many articles about watches. Daniel has 127 articles on article Alley. He joined there in February of 2010 and there is no other information about him.

Conclusion Daniel may not be a real person, or Daniel may be a collection of real people, or Daniel may be an individual. However there is no indication of any expertise or credibility about the subject he is writing on and from the tags on his articles, numbering almost 60 different subjects, it is apparent, or at least very likely that he is generating content strictly to be used for SEO purposes. Ironically enough one of his topic labels is SEO.

Conclusion all articles from this author or from article Alley can be deleted as they are not credible.

Yes that is the way it is spelled for the website. http://www.ubscure.com/Art/92917/163/Accurist-Watches-A-Brief-History.html ubscure.com is another SEO website content farming site authors biography: http://www.ubscure.com/Author/49397/Jenny-Renn.html author has written a number of articles about time pieces and according to her biography information she has a website that sells watches and other time keeping items. There is no documentation of any professional expertise or academic background in the subject area

Conclusion: author is not a credible expert and author has a distinct conflict of interest in the area of financial gain. All citations for articles from this author and from ubscure.com should be deleted.

One has to do with watching 2 thieves steal kayaks and the other has to do with a crimewatch which unless it's referring to the crime that that website constitutes itself because of its poor content is probably not what they wanted. Accurist Page[edit]

Hi JjK

Hope you are well.

I am writing with regards the Accurist Watches page.

As I have deep knowledge about the company, I tried to build its page.

However, I noticed you changed it.

I understand the references I used are not academic, however there are no academic sources for this company.

My intention was not to drive traffic to those websites, I am not an SEO content farmer. I have no idea about SEO!

When I first started writing this article, the user Fish&Karate reviewed it and said the article was very good.

As I am new to Wikipedia, could you, please, advice on that?

Flagged sources[edit]

Hi! Normally when testing things like Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Flagged sources, you should do it in your own userspace. Some projects maintain their own lists, like Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Sources. Accurist Page[edit]

Hi Jjk,

Thanks for your message on my Talk page and your advice.

As I told you before, there are no ACADEMIC sources for Accurist company.

However, when I started building its page, my guide was the pages of other watch companies, such as Citizen, Bulova, Casio and Rolex.

If you see the Citizen page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizen_Watches) they are ONLY using their own website as a source. RELIABLE? Not according to you.

If you see the Bulova page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulova) they are using both their website and other websites, which do not seem very reliable, according to what you wrote me.

If you see the Casio page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casio) their ONLY reference is their official website and corporate website. Also, another website, which actually does not work. RELIABLE? Not according to you. Plus, they have images of their products. Not advertising?

If you see the Rolex page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolex) they are using their official website and the website of their child brand (Tudor) and images of their products. However, I should recognise that the Rolex page is using many reliable sources (magazines, newspapers etc).

All the above imply to me that either the sources I used for the Accurist page should be acceptable, or the pages of the above brands should be deleted as well.

Otherwise, I could just reference the Accurist website, if that is acceptable.

Deleted the citation referencing the sponsorship ad on the Citizens company website. The nonprofit organizations that run those events each have their own websites and will very likely have a page listing the companies which are sponsoring the event or events. Those pages would make excellent citations for that part of this article. They do not have a financial interest in being promoted on the web.

Marketing/sales materials don't make credible sources[edit]

Advertisement's, even when only announcing a sponsorship, are financially promoting a company. That is in direct conflict with being a credible source. As a general rule of thumb, advertisements or other forms of marketing or promotional material are non-credible and usually don't make good material for citations or references for Wikipedia articles because they don't meet the standards for credibility and reliability.

Please make sure the citations that are put into Wikipedia articles meet the definitions and standards described in the Wikipedia policy article on verifiability. The shortcut to that page is on the right hand side of this section.

SEO Link SPAM[edit]

Another problem with using advertisements or business' own promotional material for a citation is the hordes of hired SEO-agents promoting businesses on the web. Many, (if not most), of those agents will use Wikipedia to promote their client/company. They do this mainly by trying to create links from Wikipedia to their clients business or websites. A Wikipedia reference that cites a business website from a Wikipedia article makes that business much more visible in search rankings. When this is done, John Q's Public's eyes will believe that business is much more trustworthy and has better products, generating more sales for the business. And the SEO spammers will have successfully turned Wikipedia into a sales tool.

When Wikipedia is even partially used as sales and marketing system, it erodes Wikipedia's credibility and reputation for quality. Eventually that can discourage Wikipedia editors. Over time it could cause some editors to quit. That can turn into a self-feeding loop which emits more discouragement every cycle, eventually corroding the moral of the editors to the point where some leave. Which in turn affects others.. etc and can snowball into large numbers abandoning Wikipedia. To prevent all the problems described above links from Wikipedia to businesses need to be carefully considered before being added, to prevent Wikipedia from being damaged or from being used as a promotional or marketing tool.

WP will link to businesses.[edit]

Of course Wikipedia will always have some links to businesses. How could it not? Wikipedia has tons of articles on businesses, and each article will probably have a link to its subject. Just most of the time it probably shouldn't be a citation or reference. There's a substantial conflict between Wikipedia's purpose and goals, and a business' purposes and goals. If a business is allowed to edit WP to achieve their goals, it pushes WP farther away from its own purposes.

The same applies to the links to all of Citizen's regional and national headquarters. Does their presence make the article better? One link to the list at Citizen's web site would be enough.

Businesses bid to become sponsors because it's a great way to advertise. Marketing departments know from experience how much sales will increase from the advertising it allows them to do. They know their donation will return many times over in increased revenue. The business' Sponsorship announcement is part of the media campaign to associate their Brand with the exciting/elegant sporting event. Businesses produce sponsorship advertisements to market their products and brand. In the past that companies have claimed sponsorships which they did not actually have and used small media campaigns to promote their fake sponsorship. Ambush_marketing
