Richard 1[edit]

You recently edited the Richard I of England article with the following assertion:

He was considered a hero in his day by his countrymen and has often been portrayed as one in works of literature. Alternately, to people he attempted to conquer, such as the Arabs, Richard is seen as a monster, a tyrant, and a murderer.

It is quite easy to find sources to substantiate that he was seen as a hero by his countryman, and not merely in his day - as a child I was brought up on literature that depicted Richard 1 as a hero. Part of the Robin Hood story often has Richard as the good brother and hero versus bad King John and the Sheriff of Nottingham.

However, I am not familiar with Arab literature. Is he popularly seen as "a monster, a tyrant, and a murderer". Can you provide sources for this assertion?
