The Middle Ages in history is an overview of the historiography of the Middles Ages. Historians and propagandists alike have affected how previous generations have imagined, portrayed and interpreted the Middle Ages, starting from the invention of the term "Middle Ages" in the 14th century. In every century creators and consumers of the idea have created a range of visions: humanists, antiquarians, historians, the counter-Enlightenment, Romantic nationalism— the conflicted seeming realities of these images remain with us today in the form of film, architecture, literature, art and the folk history ofpopular culture.
