Minor checkbox & edit summaries[edit]

Hi - please don't check an edit as minor unless it is simply a truly minor spelling, grammatical, or link fix. Marking significant additions as minor, as you did on the various mineral pages, is not acceptable. The use of minor edit means the change may not show up on some users watchlist, and marking a non-minor edit as such can be viewed as a deceptive attempt to sneak in under the radar. Also, the use of edit summaries is simply a polite way of communicating with other users the nature of your edit - please use them. Thanks, Vsmith 16:30, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to Template:User arc-3[edit]

I've reverted your edits to Template:User arc-3 because a) the edit you made changed a template into a category, which caused display problems on userpages, and b) Aramaic is written in other alphabets besides Hebrew, such as the actual Aramaic alphabet, Syriac, etc. My suggestion to you if you want an Aramaic template written in Hebrew script would be to create an entirely different template separate from the English-written one. Meaning: I only speak the language of Aramaic as it is written in the Talmud/Gemara.

מימר means "say", not "speak". It is the equivalent of the Hebrew אמירה as opposed to דיבור. As I pointed out in the discussion page for the tmr-N template, your Aramaic is pathetic. Cockneyite 02:06, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am aware that some Syrains speak a sort of dialect of Aramaic, but from what I hear it differs from the Aramaic used by the Amoraim. My friend's father once met a Syrian taxi driver in Chicago who spoke Aramaic, but when they compared the dialects, it was only slightly similar. Furthermore, it's very difficult for me to understand Aramiac written with Latin characters, but it is easier for me to understand if it is written using the hebrew alphabet. --Rachack 03:44, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

oh I see what happened. for some reason my browser cut off half of the text box so when I clicked save page, it deleted that part. I've been having that problem recently, maybe you can help me figure out how to fix it. I am sorry, I have no idea how to fix your problem,, you could ask at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical), they might be able to help you. If you ask there, don't forget to specify what browser you are using! Also, I would add in the link you as you asked, but whenever you follow the link it tries to print the page you are loading(in the url it says "PrintArticleEn"). Zvi Block[edit]

A page you made, Zvi Block, is currently up for dletion under WP:PROD. I did a little digging and am on the fence as to whether or not Rb. Block deserves a page, but I figured I'd inform you. --Bachrach44 16:04, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Zvi Block was affixed with a prod tag. Take a look at WP:PROD for the whole story on how that works. The short answer is that someone though Rb. Block was not notable and affixed the prod tag. If no one deletes the prod tag within 5 days admins assume it's an uncontested deletion and delete it. (If on the other hand any user objects, they can remove the prod tag and send it to WP:AFD for a full discussion). Since no one contested Zvi Block, it was deleted. You may want to take a look at WP:BIO, and if you feel that Zvi Block is worthy of a wiki page, then you are free to try and recreate it. --Bachrach44 04:12, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Aramic Userbox[edit]

Check what I wrote in Template talk:User tmr-n and the correction I made to the Box itself. If you can be persuaded by that, that your linguistic prowess in Aramaic is not as you made it out to be, maybe consider down-grading your pertained level of Aramaic knowledge.

Nero[edit]

I'm willing to accept that there are people on wikipedia who believe that every insupportable legend found in the Talmud is literal truth. I am considerably less willing to believe that such people can honestly expect that such "evidence" will be convincing to those of us who are not Orthodox Jews. The article already mentions the Jewish legend concerning Nero (as it should). It presents it appropriately, describing it as a later Jewish legend, not explicitly accepting or not accepting it, but letting the difference between this version and the main description of his life stand on its own.

The fact remains, though, that this legend is not accepted as historical fact by any reputable historian. It was written long after Nero's time, and finds no echo in the classical accounts of Nero's life. It is perfectly appropriate to mention this legend in the article. It is not appropriate to use categories to imply that it is true - it is not viewed as true by any scholars. The basic fact is that this issue is not even disputed - no serious scholar believes that Nero converted to Judaism. Even if there was an actual scholarly dispute, it would not be appropriate to include a category saying Nero converted to Judaism, when there are historians who say that this did not in fact happen. Given that all historians say that this did not in fact happen, it's pretty clear that the only appropriate thing is not to have a category claiming the highly disputable "fact" that Nero became a Jew. john k 01:13, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
