FYI: Common Mistakes[edit]

Here are some of the errors that I find myself correcting a lot:

  • Book titles that aren't italicized
  • Use of the hyphen instead of the dash, especially the em dash (—). Correct usage of the em dash, which may be inserted by typing —: I invited her over for dinner—she accepted. The book—a gift from her late father—had faded print and a worn spine. Associate Justice, U.S. Supreme Court (1993—). And, if such phrases are unavoidable, "chronic pain—reduction techniques" (because this refers to the relief of 'chronic pain', not chronic techniques aimed at relieving pain, as "severe pain-reduction techniques" seems to indicate).

On pages related to Harry Potter[edit]

  • I checked the books: Muggle and Squib are capitalized, dementor is not (but Dementor's Kiss is).
  • It's perhaps debatable whether "Harry Potter" needs to be italicized when referring to the series, e.g. "in the fictional Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling." However, for the sake of uniformity in Wikipedia articles, I italicize it whenever I see it used this way, as it does refer to a part of a title which is common to all books in the series.
  • Someone's created the hp-stub template, so use {{HarryPotter-stub}} instead of {{stub}} on incomplete Harry Potter-related articles.
  • Harry Potter is the article describing the series; Harry Potter (character), or Harry James Potter (which redirects to it), are used to refer to the character.
