External link symbol[edit]

Is there anyway to program this template to eliminate the external link symbol (featuring an arrow coming out of a little box) that follows it? It can cause display problems when the template is used in the body of article text (such as a paragraph) or in an infobox. — Eoghanacht talk 15:23, 9 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Minutes and seconds symbols[edit]

I might be incredible old-fashioned, silly or just wrong, but I prefer to use the following symbols for degrees, minutes and seconds:
degrees: ° or ° and not º
minutes: apostrophe or ' and not ´, ′ or &#prime;
seconds: " or " and not “, ″ or &#Prime;

For testing purposes copy and paste to e.g. Google Earth and look at the difference.
Is it possible to implement this in the template for future use.

You are right, but the above symbols seem to create space immediately to their right, which leaves a rather annoying kind of asymmetry. The 180 and 147 symbols did not do this. Do you know how to prevent 2032 and 2033 from doing this, or perhaps most people not care about the asymmetry? Viewfinder 03:00, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don’t see the gap on my computer (Mozilla Firefox on Windows XP, both at home and at work). That could be something unique to a particular browser/operating system, or combination thereof. Have you heard from any other users with the same problem? Try the HTML entities page on my website [1]. Gemsbok2 and DanMS: you have my sympathies, because I suffer from both of the same problems you do, but:

  1. If Google Earth can't accept the modern Unicode punctuation characters, it needs to be fixed. In fact, I reported this to them, and they replied saying they were aware of the problem, and are going to fix it in a future release.
  2. The annoying asymmetry is a browser-specific problem. (I see it too, in Firefox 1.5 under OS X 10.4.) Again, not a reason for Wikipedia not to use the correct characters.

Dutch[edit]

When I click the coor dms link from geographical articles, for instance, from the bottom of Edessa, Greece, it takes me to a Map Sources "special page" with instructions in Dutch, even though this is English Wikipedia. Line wrapping[edit]

Can somebody either unprotect this template, or make the following edit to the source:

External link image[edit]

When viewing under IE if a coor dms splits over two lines then the standard link image is corrupted. Does anyone have a possible solution for this? spacing[edit]

Is there any reason for the spacing between minutes and seconds of arc to be so big?

The spacing between the minutes and seconds looks very strange, and it is making the mountain infobox look ugly.

In my browser -- and I'm sure I'm not alone -- the minute and second marks are (wrongly) displayed in a double-wide cell, giving the appearance of an extra space. This is a browser issue or an OS font issue, not a mediawiki issue. Here are three examples:
  1. |12°34'56"| (ASCII single and double quote)
  2. |12°34’56”| (Unicode "typographical" single and double quote)
  3. |12°34′56″| (Unicode single and double prime, aka minute and second marks)
In my browser, I see extra spacing in the third form; it looks like
|12°34'  56"  |
And, of course, it's those single and double prime symbols that this template is (correctly) using.
Are you using Firefox on a Mac, Spiff? That's what I'm using.
Unfortunately, we need to live with this until the fonts are fixed; the coor templates are fine and shouldn't be changed.

Please can Coor dm be edited to match Coor dms?[edit]

At present {{Coor dm}} is using the symbol 2032 for the minutes apostrophe, and it doesn't even display in Firefox under Windows. I would like it changed. So {{{1}}}°{{{2}}}′{{{3}}} {{{4}}}°{{{5}}}′{{{6}}} would become {{{1}}}°{{{2}}}′{{{3}}} {{{4}}}°{{{5}}}′{{{6}}}, as is already the case in {{Coor dms}}.

Template appearing on its own line[edit]

This template has suddenly started appearing all on its own line in articles. I find it disruptive, but I can't find anything in the template source code that could be causing this. Is this something in the template source code or a bug in Wikipedia? JIP | Talk 17:49, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Line breaking[edit]

Further to the section above about the co-ordinates breaking over two lines, can someone get around to implementing this? At the moment, the co-ordinates often break at inconvenient points when breaking over two lines, making it look very strange. Obviously this depends on individual screen resolutions and settings, but an example is Caroline Island where, for me, the break appears like this:

9°56′13.13″S
, 150°12′41.40″W

Use the page as a template in an article, for example: {{User:Wangi/test|9|56|13.13|S|150|12|41.40|W|}} which will result in 9°56′13.13″S, 150°12′41.40″W ... And it does appear to work - argh - I must have got mixed up earlier! Thanks/wangi 16:05, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I guess you are using Internet Explorer as it works fine in Firefox. I move the comma inside the no-breaking tags, does this fix the problem? Using a non-breaking space will prevent breaking the line entirely, which I don't believe is a wanted side-effect. —Ruud 00:25, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Template not working[edit]

Strong objection to making this point at Google maps[edit]

Can anybody tell me why this template has all of a sudden been changed to point at Google's rather poor resolution streetmap site. The previous target allowed the selection of mapping appropriate to the target and required usage (for example to select a decent topographic map, or even to start up Google Earth), and was much preferrable to this approach. All the change history says is changing to google maps, problem with previous link. There is nothing there or here to detail the problems, or any other reasons for this massively retrograde step. Can somebody please explain, and give some kind of a timetable for reinstatement. I agree that the new pages are ugly. But changing back would be to put presentation before functionality; Google's maps (more street plans than proper maps) are simply not appropriate for many uses. Hybrit, Satelite vs Map[edit]

Geo microformat[edit]

It would be good if the WSG84 longitude and latitude co-ordinates in Template:Coor d could be presented using the Geo microformat in the mark-up. All that is required is for (using Coleshill, Warwickshire as an example) the HTML output:

to become:

with the addition of two spans and three classes. (Use of "Geo" on DM & DMS templates would require the replacement of the two inner spans with abbr elements, using the decimal values as the title attributes; I gather MediaWiki curently strips abbr elements?) Take a look at {{coor/new}}. It would replace {{coor}}, {{coor d}}, {{coor dm}}, {{coor dms}}, and also emits geo microformat tags. MediaWiki doesn't support <abbr> tags so I put them inside display:none spans for now. —Quarl (talk) 2007-03-18 07:13Z

Thank you! "diplay:none" seems a sensible, and effective, work around (especially as the DMS version is visible to the user). I would suggest that you give examples with named land-based locations (so that people can see the results in practice), and use a different one in each case, and give examples above and below the equator, and east and west of the GM. The CSS-free issue also needs attention; but should be easily solvable, and I'm really grateful for your prompt response. Icon[edit]

Should anyone wish to use a small icon for the Geo microformat, to alert people to its presence in infobox templates which use the above, there's one, freely available, at Image:Geo-microformat-button.png. I could come up with a few arguments, the most important one being that it is not encyclopaedic content (even those featured article stars and links to portals, both more relevant than this geo icon, were quite controversial.) Others would be that some people might consider it to be spam, it would open up the door for loads and loads of other icons cluttering the article pages, there being other less intrusive ways to promote microformats, ... —Ruud 19:54, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's as encyclopaedic as "what links here" et al; it can hardly be spam if it links to an other article on Wikipedia or WikiBooks/ Wiktionary and less so than "powered by MediaWiki"; and it wouldn't be "promoting microformats", it would be promoting microformats on Wikipedia (and could link to a specific page for that purpose, instead of the generic article, if desired) - as a feature that WP provides which rivals do not. That said, an alternative might be to place it after, and inline with, text like "Coordinates: 52.530° N 1.928° W" in the top-right hand corner of pages such as Hamstead railway station; it's no more spam than the preceding "Coordinates" link. You haven't argued what value the icon adds for a reader. Further more, I do not find the comparisons you make valid: the "what links here" link and friends and the "powered by MediaWiki" logo are not part of the article but of the interface; the "coordinates" label is a description of a piece of encyclopaedic content which might just as well be linked to an article which describes how to interpret that content, the geo icon does not describe encyclopaedic content but is meant to attract attention to some invisible feature. —Ruud 22:44, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You haven't argued what value the icon adds for a reader - it informs the reader that there is a Geo microformat on the page, and invites them to find out what a microformat is, what they can do with them and where to obtain tools which will enable them to make better use of them. Coor family replaced by {{coord}}[edit]

replaces old coor templates and adds Geo microformat.

Since no one has objected to the proposed {{coor/new}}, I have renamed it to {{Coord}} and redirected each of {{Coor d}}, {{Coor dm}}, {{Coor dms}} to {{Coord}}. I won't be surprised if unforeseen issues come up; feel free to revert if necessary. —Quarl (talk) 2007-04-02 11:30Z
