If the Balearics, the Canaries, the Basque Country, and Catalonia are in here, why aren't the rest of the Spanish autonomous communities, and for that matter American states and Canadian provinces? - Montréalais
- You're right. The initial sentence of the article specifies that this is a list of colonies, overseas territories and other not or only partially independent country-like units. The Balearics, etc. are Autonomous communities of Spain and should be removed. D.D. 00:12 Feb 7, 2003 (UTC)
- Other question: shouldn't Tibet be mentioned here? According to China it's an integral part of that country; on the other hand, it does have a government in exile. I would classify it as a non-independent country-like unit (however vague that term is). D.D. 00:23 Feb 7, 2003 (UTC)
- The problem is that the government in exile is not international recognized, and there is no formal recognition by any government that Tibet is a dependent area. The other issue is that the government in exile does not de-facto control Tibet. Finally, I doubt that the Tibetan government-in-exile claims that Tibet is a dependent area of China, rather their claim is that it is an independent nation under occupation which is different from a dependent area.

Why are Sicily and Sealand on this list? Sicily is an integral part of Italy, no more a dependency than Tuscany. And Sealand would claim not to be a dependency of anybody. -- Zoe
Removed Spratly Islands. It's disputed territory not a dependent area.
A general comment. Since there seem to be so many different entities (colonies, overseas territories, disputed territories, occupied territories, territories with a government in exile, etc...), why don't we change the name of this article into non-independent areas (which is a broader term than dependent areas). Then we can subdivide the list in all these different entities, a bit like the Dutch language wikipedia has done here. Of course, independent countries and integral parts of countries (states, provinces, etc...) should not be included. Any comments? D.D. 11:17 Feb 7, 2003 (UTC)
The above proposal has been here for 9 days. Since there has been no reaction I have moved the page. I have subdivided the list into two main parts: "dependent areas" and "other non-independent areas". I realise that the latter currently contains a very uncomplete mix of entities, but of course this can be improved a lot (I haven't been able to find a better name for it yet).
